Kutztown comes up short in 2-1 overtime loss to IUP

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 17, 2011)—The Golden Bears held their heads high after dropping a 2-1 overtime Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) thriller to Indiana University, on Saturday afternoon at Keystone Field. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears (4-2 overall, 2-1 PSAC) and the Crimson Hawks (3-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 PSAC) dueled intensely during both periods until their fate was decided by entering overtime. IUP's Heather Robbins scored the game-winning goal for the Crimson Hawks in the 92nd minute.

However the first period belonged to Kutztown who outshot Indiana 6-3. After applying much pressure to the IUP defense, KU was finally successful. In the 29th minute, senior Carolynne Kahl (Bethel, PA/Tuplehocken) put KU on the board with a beautiful header off BrieAnn Shipkowski (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central)'s corner kick. Kahl's header was perfectly placed as it riveted to the back of the net, out of IUP's reach. At intermission, the Golden Bears held the 1-0 advantage.

Robbins scored the Crimson Hawks' first goal in the 51st minute to tie the game 1-1. IUP almost took the lead in the 57th minute, when Adriana Konstantinides' shot hit the goal post. Indiana outshot Kutztown 4-2 in the second period.

Kutztown Goalie Casey Behrendt (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) recorded five saves.

“It's tough to have a loss like this,” Kutztown University head coach Erik Burstein said. “We have a young team and we're still trying to find ourselves. The first half was a very good display of the team that we can be. We dropped our concentration in the second half and let them back in the game completely. It's a learning curve but we'll continue to move forward.”

Kutztown returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 for a home game against Edinboro University at 1 p.m. Last season, the Golden Bears defeated Edinboro 1-0 and 5-1.

“There are no easy games in this conference, you never know what can happen,” Burstein said. “We'll move from this game and see what we can do on Tuesday.”
