KU looking to stay hot in pair of weekend matchups

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 15, 2011) – The Kutztown University field hockey team heads West this weekend as it will play in a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover games this weekend.  KU will face Seton Hill University on Friday and Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday.

Friday's game against the Griffins is slated for 4 p.m., and Saturday's game against IUP will start at 1 p.m.

The seventh-ranked Golden Bears (4-0 overall, 1-0 PSAC East) opened their conference schedule earlier this week with a 2-1 road win over sixth-ranked Millersville.  KU's offense has flourished through its opening four games.  It has continued to keep pressure on opposing defenses and has seen contributions from players up and down the roster.

Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) and Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades) have a team-leading four goals apiece, and are a main reason why KU is ranked fifth in Division II in scoring average (4.33 per game).  Labowitz's latest success was her pair of goals in Tuesday's victory over the Marauders.  This was her first career multi-goal game in her third year in maroon-and-gold.  Koenig, a sophomore, started off strong this season, scoring four goals in her first three games.

Senior goalkeeper Emily Falko (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) has kept KU in each of its games this season. She has 23 saves in her three games in net and has allowed just five goals.

Junior forwards Imani Ferguson (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) have some of the most experience on the KU frontline this season.  The duo has five goals this season, with Gregory leading the team with two assists.

Seton Hill (2-1) is coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to Mercyhurst on Tuesday.  Heather Apodaca and Lauren Schumacher each scored for the Griffins.

IUP (4-0) defeated Mansfield, 3-2, earlier this week.  Jillian Duld and Danielle Edwards led the charge for the Crimson Hawks with a pair of goals.  Shannon Sullivan has a team-leading four goals and three assists in her first four games.

After its weekend on the road, Kutztown returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 21 for a PSAC matchup against East Stroudsburg beginning at 7 p.m.
