NCAA ATLANTIC REGIONAL: Seniors end great careers in regional championship

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (May 16, 2011)—Senior Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars)'s goal when she suited up in the maroon and gold, was to get better each time she stepped on the field. Glomb did just that as she helped lead the Golden Bears to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship at Indiana University of Pennsylvania's Podbielski Field Monday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)

KU (41-16) saw its season come to an end when it dropped a 5-0 decision to IUP (36-6). Glomb threw six innings and struck out three. Kutztown's only hit was senior Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill)'s single to right field in the fourth inning.

The Crimson Hawks advance to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Super Regional where they will host Bloomsburg in the best-of-three series next weekend. IUP (36-6) is currently on an 11-game winning streak.

Although things didn't quite go the way the Golden Bears planned, their 2011 season bought many highlights and memories that they all are proud of. Kutztown spent six weeks ranked in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25 poll, with its highest ranking at 11th on March 16. Tedjeske and Glomb helped guide their young team to a regional championship appearance and know that KU's future is bright.

“We had a great season,” Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. “We hit most of our goals. We're a young team and I'm optimistic about the future.”

Tedjeske ended her career with 162 hits. She had her best offensive season this year with a .312 batting average and 44 hits. In addition, Tedjekse played several defensive positions for the Golden Bears. She was also selected to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East second team.

Glomb's stellar four year stint as a Golden Bear ended with 424 strikeouts, which is second on the KU career pitching records. Her 53 career wins is fourth on the career pitching records and her 16 career shutouts are tied for third. She had 130 strikeouts this season, the most in any of her seasons and is fifth on the KU single season pitching record. Glomb also had seven shutouts this year which is tied for fourth on the single season pitching record list. She was also named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East first team.

“My career went by so fast,” Glomb said. “I feel like I was just a freshman yesterday. Pitching has been a part of my life for so long so I'm really going to miss it.”

Both seniors participated in Spring Commencement and will be starting the next chapter of their lives. Tedjeske, an Art Education major plans to teach while Glomb plans to use her Leisure and Sports Studies degree right away. Her first day of her internship is tomorrow where she will be working in a recreational center.

“It's always bittersweet in the end,” Lawes said. “The end to someone's season is always a loss unless you win a national championship. You're always going to miss your seniors. They created great experiences and memories and it gets sad when it's over.”

Now that the lights have dimmed on the career of two stellar athletes, it's time for Kutztown to keep moving forward and progressing, always remember those before them, who helped pave the way. KU's 2012 season anticipates a lot of excitement but Glomb has one piece of advice she'd like to share.

“Play every game hard and try to win every game,” Glomb said. “It helps you in the long run and play every game like it's your last.”
