NCAA ATLANTIC REGIONAL: KU drops 2-1 thriller to host IUP

INDIANA, Pa. (May 14, 2011)— The Kutztown University softball team dropped a close 2-1 decision to host Indiana University of Pennsylvania in game three of the NCAA Division II Softball Atlantic Regional at IUP's Podbielski Field on Saturday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears (40-15) will play against the winner of the upcoming elimination game between California and Winston-Salem State University at a time to be determined later. The Crimson Hawks (35-6) will play against an opponent to be determined in the championship game Sunday at noon. (NCAA TOURNAMENT PAGE)

Daily admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and $2 for children 12 and under. No pets are allowed at Podbielski Field.

IUP scored its only runs of the game on the strength of three hits in its first at bat. Marissa Leslie lined a one-out triple to centerfield and Megan McCormick followed with a single up the middle to give the Crimson Hawks a 1-0 lead. After Stef Poates laid down a sacrifice bunt, Tunno dropped a double just inside the left field line to plate McCormick.

The Golden Bears responded with a run in the top of the second to cut their deficit in half. With two outs and nobody on, Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill) doubled to right center and Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) added a two-base hit to score Tedjeske.

“It was a good opportunity for me to come up and get the inning started,” Tedjeske said. “Bri stepped up and scored me and it was a great two-out rally.”

Tedjeske has spent most of the season as Kutztown's designated hitter and knows exactly what her role is every time she steps in the batter's box.

“It's an important role because that's what I'm there to do,” Tedjeske said. “I don't play the field so it's my job to come up with big hits for my team whenever we need them…it's my job.”

Neither team scored for the rest of the game and Kutztown finished with three hits. Knipe was 2-for-3 and Tedjekse was 1-for-3.

“We need to be more confident whenever we get up to the plate,” Tedjeske said. “We have to do the little things right so that we can help out our pitchers and the team.”

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) (19-6) went the distance for the Golden Bears, scattering six hits and striking out five without issuing a walk.

With two outs and a runner on third in the sixth inning, KU right fielder Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) made a beautiful diving catch to prevent IUP from scoring.

Although Kutztown is unsure of its next opponent in the NCAA Atlantic Regional, it knows what it has to do to stay alive in the championship chase.

“We have to focus more on our hitting,” Tedjeske said. “That's what we are lacking right now and we have to get our eye back on the ball to and get some hits. If we come through with hits and make all the plays on the field we won't have anything to worry about.”
