KUTZTOWN, Pa. (March 22, 2011)— Tuesday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division home opener against Millersville University was just like any day for the members of the Kutztown University softball team.

The Golden Bears had a day of surprises as they swept the Marauders 8-2, and 4-0 on North Campus Field. KU (23-4 overall, 2-0 PSAC East) is currently 11th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) top 25 poll. Millersville fell to 10-10 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC East Division.

The first treat of the day came when pitcher Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) recorded her second career at-bat and first career hit. Her teammates cheered loudly when she entered the batter's box. When she singled to right field, Glomb's facial expression to cheering fans had a look of disbelief but it was quickly overshadowed with a smile.

“I was really nervous,” Glomb said. “It was the second time in college that I'd hit off a real pitcher. But I practice batting every day so I had some confidence. “

Freshman centerfielder Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) was full of confidence in Tuesday's games and had three triples on the day. In both games she combined for three runs, four hits, and three RBIs. Hetzler leads the Golden Bears with a .415 batting average and in triples with five this season. She is fourth on the team in hits (22).

“My swing has been pretty good lately and I've been trying to stay focused on keeping a nice, leveled swing,” said Hetzler about her three triples against the Marauders. “I'm trying to let the hits come to me rather than chase them and have a bad at-bat. It feels really good to help contribute to my team as a freshman and I'm going to keep working as hard as I can to maintain. “

While most newcomers would be a bit nervous about opening conference play, Hetzler is ready for more.

“I don't get nervous,” Hetzler said. “I just love playing the game.”

In the first game KU had 13 hits, nine of those belonged to Hetzler, Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami), and catcher Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg). Hetzler, Isgro, and Lynch each had three hits. Isgro had two RBIs and Lynch recorded one.

Glomb pitched three innings to get the win and is now 10-3. She faced 14 batters and struck out six. In the second game, Glomb threw a no-hitter until the sixth inning when MU recorded two hits, which were the only hits for the Marauders.

“It was exciting to pitch a no-hitter until the sixth inning,” Glomb said. “I have to continue working on staying strong for seven innings and throwing my best the entire game.”

In the second game, Kutztown collected all of its runs in the fourth inning. KU used hits from Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg), Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), Stephanie Graver (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco), Jennifer Stow (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley), and Hetzler to take the 4-0 advantage.

Kutztown will continue its run in the PSAC East Division when it hosts Shippensburg on Friday, March 25 for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
