Softball picks up a pair of victories in Virginia


SALEM, Va. (March 19, 2011) – The Kutztown University softball team used some clutch hitting to win two of three games Saturday at Salem Invitational. After losing 3-1 to Seton Hill in the opening game, the Golden Bears rebounded to edge Shepherd, 2-1, in eight innings and beat Davis & Elkins, 3-1.

Kutztown, ranked 11th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) top 25 poll, improved its overall record to 19-4.
 
In the nightcap against Davis & Elkins, the Golden Bears scored two of their three runs with two outs. Sophomore Stephanie Pritchard (Parkesburg, PA/Octorara) tossed a complete game and struck out seven batters. Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg) drove in a run in the first inning. Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill), who was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, slugged a two-out solo home run in the second inning. Sam Derr capped a perfect day at the plate against D&E by driving in a run in the fourth inning.
 
In the win over Shepherd, the Golden Bears used some timely hitting to ease the sting of the opening game defeat. Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill) had the game-winning RBI single in the top of the eighth inning. Elizabeth Kangas crossed the plate with the winning run. Sam Derr finished off the victory by stranding the tying run on third base with one out.

Kutztown broke on top first in the third inning when Derr's RBI single scored Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg). Kangas had a key sacrifice bunt in the inning that advanced Booth to second base. Derr finished with four strikeouts for the Golden Bears.

Monica Glomb struck out eight batters in the first game. However, Stefanie Wiegard spoiled the shutout and ended the shutout when she hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning. Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg) answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. Derr also doubled for the Golden Bears against the Griffins.

Kutztown finishes its Salem trip with Sunday games against Wheeling-Jesuit and the University of Charleston starting at 11 a.m.
