Kutztown women fall short against West Chester

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (February 9, 2011) -- The Kutztown University women's basketball team dropped a 58-52 decision to West Chester University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game Wednesday evening at Keystone Arena. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears fell to 12-9 overall and 5-4 in the PSAC East. Despite struggling to find its shooting touch in the first half, KU found life and tied the game, 52-52 with two minutes, 42 seconds remaining.

However, West Chester finished the game by scoring the final six points to improve its record to 16-5 and 7-2.
Senior forward Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) recorded her 29th career double-double, leading the Golden Bears with 17 points and 13 rebounds. She also led the team with five assists. McQuade hit two 3-pointers and was 7-for-10 from the free throw line.

Sophomore forward Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds making it her third double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) tallied 16 points and was 7-for-13 from the field.

“We came back in the second half and we started making our shots,” McQuade said. “We had a lot of turnovers that really killed us but I thought we did a good job of coming back.”

Alex Lennon and Mary Kate Serratelli each finished with 12 points for WCU. Lennon was a threat to Kutztown in the paint and recorded seven blocks. Defensively WCU grabbed 51 rebounds to Kutztown's 39.
West Chester controlled the first half and capitalized off KU's missed shots. The Golden Rams' biggest lead of the first half was 32-20 advantage at halftime.

The Golden Bears still have hope for the PSAC playoffs. Even with their loss tonight KU is still in fourth place after Shippensburg dropped a 65-55 decision to Bloomsburg earlier this evening. Kutztown has a one-game advantage over the Red Raiders plus it owns the tiebreaker by virtue of its season sweep.

“It is really important for us to win our remaining games,” McQuade said. “If we want to compete for a shot at the PSAC playoffs we have to play better and smarter. If one person is having a bad game, then as a team we have to step it up. We aren't going to be successful if everyone is having an off day.”

Kutztown will have the opportunity to regroup when is travels to PSAC East leader Bloomsburg, Saturday February 12.Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

In their last meeting the Huskies upset the Golden Bears 87-84 at Keystone Arena January 15. McQuade tied her career-high points with 30 against Bloomsburg and Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) and Wood combined for 32 points. Kutztown is 3-6 overall on the road and has five games remaining in PSAC East play.
