ERIE, PA (February 25, 2011) – The Kutztown University wrestling team has seven of its ten wrestlers still in competition after the first day of the 2011 NCAA Division II Super Regional One Wrestling Tournament hosted by Gannon University.
John Paukovits (Northampton, PA/Northampton), the No. 1 seed at 149 pounds, won both of his matches Friday and moves on to the next round on an 11-match winning streak. His day was highlighted by an 18-3 tech. fall over Seton Hill's Stephen Smith. Paukovits will wrestle fourth-seeded Nathan Link from Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday. Paukovits won by a 10-5 decision when these two faced off on Jan. 8 at Keystone Arena.
Also winning both of his matches Friday was sophomore Austin Williams (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl). The No. 3 wrestler at 133's day consisted of a tech. fall and an 11-6 decision over Gannon's John Fleming. This is the second time he has taken down Fleming this year. Williams rides his 15-match winning streak into the second day of the tournament and is set to wrestler second-seeded Aaron Smith from American International. Smith won the two's earlier meeting this season by a 5-2 decision on Dec. 11.
Paukovits and Williams are the only two Golden Bears to win both of their first two matches on Friday and are each a win away from securing a trip to nationals.
Kutztown is currently in seventh place after the first day at regionals. They have 32 points, 33 behind leader Newberry College who has 65.
Desmond Moore (Easton, PA/Easton) (125) and Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) (197) each went 2-1 and are both seeded eighth in their weight class. Moore will go up against No. 4 Kenny Trumbetta from Seton Hill Saturday. Moore won their earlier meeting this season by a 1-0 decision. Ortiz won by a fall and major decision and goes up against Mercyhurst's Michael Pollard tomorrow. Pollard is seeded fifth.
Zach Marlatt (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) (174) won his second match of the season on Friday, defeating Shippensburg's Zachary Hogentogler by fall in 6 minutes, 8 seconds. Marlatt goes up against fifth-seeded Matt Littleton of West Liberty State.
Seth Csaszar (Northampton, PA/Northampton) (184), seeded third, split his two matches with his one win coming by fall in 2 minutes, 6 seconds. Justin Grant (Easton, PA/Easton) (285) also split his matches Friday, taking down Anderson University's Chase Duke 10-2.
Anthony Frost (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing) (157) and Ricky Pena (Reading, PA/Reading) (165) each went 1-2. Frost won his match by a 6-4 decision and Pena won by fall in 2 minutes, 52 seconds.
