UConn transfer Frey highlights first wave of 2011 Kutztown football recruits

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (February 22, 2011) – Kutztown University head football coach Raymond Monica is excited about his 2011 recruiting class. (COMPLETE LIST OF EARLY RECRUITS)

“We are excited with the young men that we have signed,” Monica said. “The coaching staff did an excellent job in their recruiting. We were able to fill some needs. We are looking forward to see what this class will accomplish during their time here.”

Pennsylvania natives accounted for all of the recruits. They will join a program that is coming off the best year in the 95-season history of the program. The Golden Bears posted a 10-2 overall record and finished the 2010 season ranked 13th in the final American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) top 25 poll. They were also 14th in the last d2football.com poll. Kutztown set school records for wins in a season, points in a season, and was the No. 1 seed in the Super Region I of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Of the 18 recruits, seven are offensive performers, and 11 are defensive players. The 11 defensive players include five defensive backs, three linebackers and three defensive lineman. The seven offensive recruits consist of two running backs, an offensive lineman, two wide receivers, and a pair of quarterbacks.

Here's a closer look at the recruits:

Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) (quarterback): A three-year letterwinner at Hollidaysburg High School, Barton was a first team All-Conference quarterback and safety. Barton was an honorable mention all-state quarterback. He also received Hollidaysburg's Character Award. An honor roll student, Barton is planning to major in physics and biology.

Shawn Brannon (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville Area) (safety): He was named second team all-Ches-Mont League as a senior at Coatesville Area High School. He is undecided about his major at Kutztown.
 
Kyle Brubaker (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) (free safety): A two-year starter and team captain, Brubaker was a three-year letterwinner and named to the Mid-Penn Conference first team. In addition to helping Cumberland Valley High School win the 2009 and 2010 PIAA Class AAAA District Three titles, he was selected to the Associated Press' Class AAAA second team. Brubaker, who finished his career with 12 interceptions, was a second team All-Harrisburg Patriot News selection and Eddy Award winner. An honor roll student, Brubaker is undecided about his major.
 
Drake Brumfield (Marietta, Pa./Donegal) (safety): He was named the Donegal High School defensive back of the year two straight seasons and named first team all-section defense. Brumfield also won the team's Iron Man Award. An honor roll student, he will major in criminal justice.
 
Christian DeAngelo (defensive end): He was named the T102 Lineman of the Year and second team All-state selection for Pottsville High School. DeAngelo was also selected to the WNEP (Channel 16) Dream Team. Named the Berks IC Section 1 offensive and defensive lineman of the year and Schuylkill County first team.
 
Anthony DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) (defensive back): He was named the Norristown High School Defensive Player of the Year and team MVP. He was first team all-Suburban One League wide receiver and safety. DiNolfi was named first team all-area and third team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania. DiNolfi was fourth team all-state and plans to major in law and criminal justice.
 
Adam Goeringer (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) (linebacker): Goeringer was a 2009 and 2010 honorable mention All-state selection at Dallas Area High School. He was named the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader and Citizens Voice most valuable player. Goeringer was also selected to the WNEP (Channel 16) Dream Team. He was a 3-year varsity starter and a four-year varsity wrestler. Goeringer was also named the 2009 and 2010 Coaches' League MVP.
 
Robbie Frey (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) (running back): Transfer from the University of Connecticut. Was a top-notch kickoff returner for the Huskies. He returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown in the Tostito's Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma. He rushed for 101 yards against Texas Southern and 112 yards against Buffalo (Sept. 25). He had 15 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown against the University of Cincinnati. Finished the 2010 season ranked 34th in the country in kickoff returns and fourth in the BIG EAST. Frey played in 31games with the Huskies. In 2009, Frey returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown against Rutgers. He was named UConn's Special Teams Player of the Year. He was selected for the Pennsylvania East-West All-Star Game and was a first-team AAA all-State pick in 2005 and 2006. Also named first-team All-State by the Pittsburgh Sports Report. He rushed 282 times as a senior at Lehighton for 2,035 yards and 27 touchdowns. Frey holds Lehighton's career rushing record at 4,845 yards and its season scoring record with 162 points. He was named to the Pennsylvania Football News All-Academic Silver Team.
 
Anthony Kelly (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) (wide receiver): Kelly was named first team all Berks IC Section I following his senior season at Pottsville Area High School.
 
Cameron Lipnicky (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) (defensive end): Lipnicky helped Trinity High School win the PIAA Class AA District III championship and Mid-Penn Conference Division champions. He recorded 56 tackles, made four sacks and blocked two punts in 2010. Lipnicky was named first team All-Sentinal defensive end. He was selected to the second team of the following: Eastern Pa. Football.com, PANews.com and all-Harrisburg Patriot News. An honors student, Lipnicky plans to major in electronic media and minor in leisure and sport studies.
 
Travis Martin (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) (defensive end): Martin was named first team All-Mid Penn conference as a defensive end and second team All-conference as an offensive lineman at Gettysburg High School. He was a three-year letterwinner and team captain. An honor roll student, Martin plans to major business.
 
Mike Nowak (Limerick, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) (center): Playing at Owen J. Roberts High School, Nowak was a first team All-conference as a center and second team All-conference as a defensive tackle. In addition, Nowak was an honorable mention all-state center. He is undecided about his major.
 
Casey Perlstein (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) (quarterback): Perlstein was a mini-Maxwell Award winner and finalist for the Jim Henry Award. He wrapped his three-year career as the only quarterback in Upper Perkiomen High School and second player in Pioneer Athletic Conference history to run and throw for over 1,000 yards in a single season. He was a two-time All-PAC quarterback (2009 & 2010) and named to the All-area team. He won the PIAA Norristown Chapter of Officials Sportsmanship Award. Perlstein made the distinguished honor roll every marking period and he is planning to major in chemistry.
 
Matt Shields (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) (defensive back): A three-year starter as a quarterback and defensive back, Shields was named All-Berks. He helped Pottsville High School to an appearance in the 2008 PIAA Class AAA title game. Shields finished his career with over 2,000 yards passing and 700 yards rushing. An honor roll student, Shields plans to major in elementary education.
 
Louis Smith (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) Jr. (wide receiver): A two-sport standout, Smith was a member of the PIAA Class AAAA team, all-Southeastern Pennsylvania and All-Ches-Mont League in football. He was also All-league and area in track and field. He was the president of the National Honor Art Society and earned the
Downingtown West High School
Excellence Award. Smith plans to major in fine arts.
 
Adrian Sterling (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North) (running back): Was the captain of his football team at East Stroudsburg North High School and a Mountain Valley Conference100-meter dash champion. An honor roll student, Sterling plans to major in psychology.
