Kutztown (10-10) won seven of the ten matches and saw its wrestlers take down some regionally ranked opponents along the way.
Seth Csaszar (Northampton, PA/Northampton) took down the third ranked wrestler in Super Region I at 184 pounds in Brandon McKeown by a 5-3 decision. Csaszar continues his charge during this second semester with Tuesday night's win as he holds a 5-3 record this season. Csaszar is currently ranked sixth in the region.
Tuesday night was senior night for the Golden Bears as they honored John Paukovits (Northampton, PA/Northampton) and Bryce Ebert (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) for their career accomplishments. Paukovits, ranked first in the region at 149, took home a tough 1-0 decision against Tyler Wilton Tuesday night, earning him his 15th win of the season.
Justin Grant (Easton, PA/Easton) also earned a tough win at heavyweight to close out the night for KU, defeating ESU's Will Weaver by a 2-1 decision. Grant now leads the team with 20 wins this season and is ranked fourth in the region.
“I'm real pleased with our match tonight,” said head wrestling coach Rob Fisher. “We had great efforts all up and down the lineup.”
One of the top matches of the night came at 174 where KU's Zach Marlatt (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) went up against the Warriors' Jeff Jacobs. Jacobs came into the match ranked sixth in the region and on an 11-match winning streak. After being down 3-0 late in the match, Marlatt used a reversal to take down Jacobs by fall in 3 minutes, 52 seconds. This was Marlatt's first dual meet win of the season after sitting out the first semester.
“Zach has worked real hard to get where he's at now,” said Fisher. “He got himself in shape and has a lot of tough matches this season. We're real excited to see him get his first win.”
Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) also wrestled well despite dropping 5-4 decision. Ortiz went up against fourth ranked Ed Ebewo and seemed to control most of the match. Ortiz is 8-10 this season and has continued to turn in top performances late in the season.
Austin Williams (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) (133) and Desmond Moore (Easton, PA/Easton) (125) each earned wins by forfeit. Williams is now second on the team with 19 wins.
Seven of the eight matches that were contested for Tuesday night had at least one wrestler ranked in the latest Super Region I poll. The Golden Bears also avenged their loss to the Warriors from last season which snapped an eight match winning streak at the time.
Kutztown heads into its final dual meet of the season as it travels to Shippensburg on Friday. Action is set to get underway at 7:00 p.m.
