Golden Bears Upended by Cal in Crossover Action

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown shot 58 percent in the first half, but California (Pa.) was even hotter, sinking 16 threes on the evening as the Vulcans downed the Golden Bears 89-67 at Keystone Arena.

Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) (Richmond, VA/Godwin) was 6-of-8 on the night for KU and went 4-of-6 from three-point range to finish with 16 points.  Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) also reached double figures for the Golden Bears with 12 points.  The sophomore also blocked three shots.

Cal's Amy Johns and Megan Kermond tied Sisson for game-high honors with 16 points apiece.  Kermond was one of three Vulcans with four threes in the game as the team converted 16-of-33 (49 percent).  Stephanie Michael had all 12 of her points from beyond the arc and Chelsea McKnight was a perfect 4-of-4 on threes and finished with 13 points.  Danielle Luckett added 11 points for Cal.

Kutztown held an early lead after a layup by Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) (Walnut, PA/Northampton) made it 6-3 less than two minutes into the action, but the Vulcans ran off 10 straight points to take the lead.  KU cut it to 13-11 after a jumper by Sisson with 14:30 left in the period, but another 10-0 run by Cal built the Vulcans lead to 42-27 with 2:34 left before the break.

Sisson did her best to keep the Golden Bears in the game in the first half, going 5-of-6 from the floor – including three threes – on her way to 13 points.  KU shot 14-of-24 from the floor in the first half, but Cal took a 46-32 lead into the intermission after converting 13 Kutztown turnovers into 16 points.

“The turnovers were killers,” said Kutztown Head Coach Janet Malouf.  “And they weren't turnovers where we could get back to play defense.  They turned them into layups.  We've got a young team and we're going to make some mistakes.  Tonight, Cal capitalized on those mistakes and made a lot of threes.”

Cal's strong outside shooting continued into the second half as the lead grew as big as 27 points, 70-43, after a three by McKnight with 11:38 to play.  Kutztown continued to fight, getting as close as 72-57 with 6:12 to play after a layup by Hodgson, but could get no closer.

“I thought we played hard and kept fighting,” Malouf observed.  “Keyla Pullen (Richmond, VA/Monacan) (Richmond, VA/Monacan) came in and did a good job running the team.  Tanejha Smith (Allentown, PA/William Allen) (Allentown, PA/William Allen) gave us a spark off the bench.  Aly York (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) (Douglassville, PA/Danielle Boone) hit some shots.  There were some positives. ”

KU outshot the Vulcans overall, 43 percent to 42 percent, but the Vulcans hot shooting night behind the arc proved to be the difference.

“They shot exceptionally well on threes,” Malouf noted about the Vulcans.  “They have good athletes.  It was one of those nights.”
Johns and Selena Adamshick each had nine rebounds for Cal to lead all players.  Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) hauled in eight boards to lead Kutztown.

The Golden Bears will look to get back in the win column when Indiana (Pa.) visits Keystone Arena on December 10.
