KUTZTOWN, Pa. (December 8, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's basketball team is gearing up to host a set of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossovers games on Friday, Dec. 9 against California (Pa.) and on Saturday, Dec. 10 against Indiana (Pa.) at Keystone Arena.
Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday against the Vulcans and 2 p.m. on Saturday against the Crimson Hawks.
Kutztown (3-6 overall, 2-2 PSAC) is currently fourth in the PSAC East. California (3-3 overall, 2-2 PSAC) is fifth in the PSAC West. IUP (6-0 overall, 4-0 PSAC) is one of two other teams in the PSAC West (Edinboro and Gannon) who remain undefeated in the conference.
The Golden Bears have had some close calls with both the Vulcans and Crimson Hawks over the past few years but haven't been able to pull away with a win.
The last time KU was victorious over Indiana (Pa.) was Dec. 21, 2004 when it defeated IUP 56-46. Kutztown saw its last win against Cal on Dec. 22, 2001, when it used a 64-51 decision to oust the Vulcans. Both of KU's wins were at Keystone Arena.
Kutztown's youthful 2011-12 squad is being spearheaded by three returners who are averaging double figures in scoring this season.
Junior guard
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, PA/ Spring Ford) is averaging 15.8 points a game and has already put up 142 points in the season. Her 142 points are second amongst the PSAC in scoring for the season. Wood also leads the team in steals (11) and is shooting 44.5% from the field.
Wood's numbers are complimented by her counterpart sophomore
Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) (Richmond, VA/ Godwin) . Sisson leads KU in assists (23) and 3-pointers (21). Sisson is tallying around 11.8 points a game.
Sophomore
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) (Surf City, NJ/ Southern Regional) has shown tremendous growth for Kutztown this season. The 5'11 guard is shooting 44% from the field and averages 11.4 points/game. Hodgson also showcases her ability to box out as she has grabbed 56 rebounds on the year. Hodgson also has a team-high 12 blocks. Additionally, Hodgson tops the PSAC in free throw percentage (92.5%). As a team, KU also leads the conference in free throw percentage (77.6%).
Junior
Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, PA/ Indian Valley) leads the Golden Bears in rebounds (80) and has scored in double figures three times this year.
Kutztown's bench has also done a great job of coming in and keeping the Golden Bears in games throughout the season. KU will need all of its factors to sync together to pick up a pair of imperative wins over the weekend.
The Vulcans are led by Amy Johns who is averaging 17.5 points this season. John's is 40-for-83 from the field and is second on the team in rebounds (32).
Danielle Luckett (11.3 points/game) is shooting 48.3% and leads the Vulcans in assists (19). Megan Kermond who is recording 9.5 points/game is 19-for-38 field and leads Cal in 3-pointers (15).
IUP's Sarah Pastorek, Vianca Tejada, Ashley Stoner, Marita Mathe, and Leslie Stapleton are all in double figures in scoring for the Crimson Hawks. Pastorek leads the bunch with 14.3 points a game. As a team, Indiana (Pa.) shoots 48.3 % from the field and 42 % from the 3-point range, which leads the conference. Indiana is second in the PSAC in scoring offense, putting up 83.3 points/game.
