SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (December 4, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's basketball team overcame an eight point deficit at halftime and was able to slide by Slippery Rock University, 50-47 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game Sunday afternoon at Morrow Field House.
The Golden Bears (3-6 overall, 2-2 PSAC) were led by junior
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) who scored 16 points against The Rock (1-5 overall, 0-4 PSAC).
Wood fueled a 7-1 run at the start of the second half when she drove to the basket for a layup to slice SRU”s led to 23-17 with 19:52 remaining. The run also included baskets from
Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley),
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional), and
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area).
With 14:50 left, Wood gave KU the first lead of the game when she used another layup to take the 28-26 advantage. The Golden Bears defense limited the Lakers to just one field goal during the run which was a 3-pointer from Jasmine Cooper.
Slippery Rock was able to regain the advantage but a field goal from
Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) with 5:48 left, tied the game 39-39. A pair of free throw shots from Zewe just seconds later gave KU the lead which they held for the remainder of the game.
Zewe finished with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) also reached double figures in scoring for the sixth time this season. She recorded 11 points and was 5-for-11 from the field.
The Rock also placed three players in double figures in scoring. SRU was led by Danielle Smith who recorded a double-double with a game-high 18 points and 17 rebounds. Cooper added 13 points, while Paris Thomas finished with 11.
The Golden Bears finished the weekend 1-1 during PSAC crossover action. Kutztown returns back to action when it hosts California (Pa.) on Friday, Dec. 9 at 5:30 p.m. and Indiana (Pa.), Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. for more PSAC crossover games. Both games will be at Keystone Arena.
