ERIE, Pa. (December 3, 2011)--The Kutztown University women's basketball team dropped a thrilling 67-60 loss to Mercyhurst College in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
The Golden Bears (2-6 overall, 1-2 PSAC) were led by sophomore Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) who scored a career high 24 points. Sisson shot the ball well on all sides of the court. She was 8-for-15 from the field and 6-for-12 from the 3-point range. Her six 3-pointers against the Lakers was also a career-high.
The Lakers (1-4 overall, 0-2 PSAC) recorded its first victory of the 2011-12 season against KU on Saturday.
Kutztown and Mercyhurst had a competitive first half that featured three ties and four lead changes. The Golden Bears took the 32-30 lead at halftime, following a 5-0 run with 1:12 remaining in the first half.
KU held the lead in the second half until Mercyhurst's Kaylee Foster broke away with a steal and used a layup to tie the game 34-34 with 16:38 remaining. Sisson responded with a 3-pointer to push the Golden Bears up 37-34 but Foster hit a pair of foul shots along with a jumper from Nikki Frederickson to give the Lakers the 38-37 lead with 14:44 left.
Mercyhurst continued to control the game, but KU stayed within its reach. However the Lakers never allowed the Golden Bears to regain the lead.
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) also scored in double figures for KU. Hodgson finished with 11 points. Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) finished with a game-high 12 rebounds. Zewe also scored eight points.
Frederickson finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Foster also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points.
The Golden Bears will visit Slippery Rock on Sunday, Dec. 4 for a PSAC crossover game. Tip-off is set off for 1 p.m.
