Balanced Attack Leads KU to 69-55 Win Over Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 30, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Chestnut Hill College 69-55, in a non-conference game at Ann Rusnack Sorgenti Arena on Wednesday night. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears (2-5 overall) picked up its first road win of the season over the Griffins who fell to 0-5 following the loss.

KU placed four Golden Bears in double figures in scoring against Chestnut Hill.

Kutztown was led by sophomore Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) who finished with 16 points and a game-high seven assists. Sisson also picked up four rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Sisson knocked down four 3-pointers and shot 4-for-10 from the field.

Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) recorded her second double-double of the season. Zewe finished with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Zewe was 5-for-9 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) and junior Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) also reached double figures in scoring. Hodgson recorded 12 points along with six assists, while Wood tallied 10 points and five assists. Hodgson and Wood were perfect from the free throw line, shooting 4-for-4.

The Golden Bears used a 5-1 run late in the first half with just under five minutes remaining. KU's run was fueled by an Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) jumper that pushed KU's lead to 24-17. As time dwindled, KU used a Zewe jumper, a pair of free throws from Wood, a rainbow 3-pointer from Hodgson, and a layup from Brittany LeVan (Centre Hall, PA/Penns Valley) to give Kutztown the 33-20 lead at halftime.

The Griffins tried to catch up with the Golden Bears in the second half but Kutztown continued to control the ball. CHC got within its closet reach when it sliced KU's led to 62-53 following a jumper from Latoya Laing with 1:32 left in the game.

Chestnut Hill was led by Aiesha Hill who finished with 16 points. Laing also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points. Hill and Laing each added five assists.

The Griffins did take advantage of KU's 17 turnovers by scoring 14 points.

Defensively, Kutztown grabbed 49 rebounds and scored 30 points in the paint.

The Golden Bears hope to ride the momentum gained off this road win as they prepare for a pair of tough Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover games this weekend.

KU will travel to Erie, Pa. on Saturday, Dec. 3 to face Mercyhurst. On Sunday, Dec. 4 Kutztown will visit Slippery Rock for more PSAC crossover action. Both games are set to tip-off at 1 p.m.
