Golden Bear Comeback Bid Falls Short Against Sciences

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (November 23, 2011) – Kutztown University erased a 10-point deficit in the second half, but the University of Sciences pushed the game into overtime and claimed a 78-72 win in non-conference women's basketball at Keystone Arena Wednesday afternoon.

A pair of free throws by the Devils' (2-2) Brianne Traub put the Golden Bears (1-4) down 62-52 with 6:08 to play.  A free throw by Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) started a 16-2 run, however, that put Kutztown on top 68-64 with just 21 seconds to play.  Keyla Pullen (Richmond, VA/Monacan) scored eight straight Golden Bear points in the run, her only scores of the game.

After Sciences scored to cut it back to a two-point game, Kutztown turned the ball over and Elisabeth Birman grabbed an offensive rebound and tied the game with just five seconds to play in regulation, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra period, KU trailed by just one after a bucket by Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) with 37 seconds left, 73-72.  The Devils' Isabella Ross hauled in an offensive rebound and put it back in, forcing the Golden Bears to foul down the stretch.

Kutztown led 17-10 in the first half after a bucket by Brittany Greaves (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) with 12:17 to go in the half, but an 18-6 run fueled a 32-27 halftime advantage for the Devils.

Hodgson continued her strong play for Kutztown.  After scoring a career-high 24 points against Gannon on Sunday, she entered the starting lineup and notched a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Hodgson was a perfect 6-of-6 shooting and her rebounds were a career-high, as were her four blocked shots.

Wood went 7-of-18 on her way to a team-high 18 points and added three steals.  Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) hit three threes on her way to 14 points and dished out five assists.  Aly York (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone), who never had more than one assist in a game, passed out a team-best six in the contest.

Sciences was strong on the offensive glass, turning 19 offensive boards into 21 points.  Becca Ruggear had 14 points and 16 rebounds in the win.  Traub led the Devils with 18 points.  Carolyn Edwards shot 7-of-15 and went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc on her way to 17 points.  Jessica Sylvester hit four threes, all in the first half, on her way to a 12-point outing.  Kaitlyn Schmid led the team with five assists.

The Devils also hit 18-of-23 free throws as a team (78 percent).

Kutztown hit 38 percent from three point range, while Sciences went 8-of-18 (44 percent).  The Golden Bears, however, tightened their perimeter defense in the second half and overtime.  After the Devils went 6-of-9 in the first half, Kutztown held them to just 2-of-9 the rest of the way.
