Kutztown wrestling opens dual season with pair of victories

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (November 22, 2011) – The Kutztown University dominated the higher weight classes en route to wins over Delaware Valley and Elizabethtown.   The Golden Bears downed the Aggies 29-16 before taking down the Blue Jays 25-15.

From 157 thru heavyweight, KU won nine of the 12 bouts, taking control of both matches to pick up the wins.

The Golden Bears opened the day against the Aggies, ranked 22nd in Division III.  With Kutztown leading 23-12, Vinny Campanile (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) sealed the win when he pinned Delaware Valley's Joseph Richard in 2:20.

The two teams traded wins in the lower weight classes.  KU's Desmond Moore (Easton, PA/Easton) had opened things up against the Aggies with an 8-7 decision at 125. Even Yenolevich scored an 11-2 major decision at 141 to put Kutztown up 7-6.

Trailing 12-7 entering the match at 157, Bionojel Candelaria started a string of five straight wins for the Golden Bears with a technical fall (18-2) in 3:41.  Anthony Frost (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing) followed at 165 with a 7-5 overtime win.  Zach Marlatt (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) registered the Golden Bears' second technical fall win of the day at 174, dispatching his opponent in 6:47 (15-0).  Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) then registered a 4-1 decision at 184.

In the nightcap against Elizabethtown, the two teams also traded victories to start the match.  Moore picked up his second win of the afternoon with a 3-2 decision at 125 and decision at 141 by Yenolevich tied the match at 6-6.

After the Blue Jays went ahead 9-6, Anthony Frost (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing) notched a 7-5 final to tie things up again, before Candelaria picked up his second lopsided victory of the day with a 10-0 major decision at 165.  Marlatt gave the Golden Bears a 19-9 lead after the 174 bout, pinning his opponent in just 1:32.

Campanile once again sealed the win with a win by fall, putting Cameron Aregood to the mat in 2:07.  It was Campanile's second pin of the afternoon.

Six Golden Bears won both their matches on the afternoon, led by Campanile's two-fall performance.  Marlett also registered a pin after gaining a technical fall in his first bout.  Candelaria had wins by technical fall and major decision.  Yenolevich was credited with a major decision among his two wins.  Moore and Frost won both of their matches by decision.

The three teams also wrestled several exhibition matches not included in the team scoring.  At 141, Mitch Voelker (Shoemakersville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) notched a 4-1 decision and Julio Arredondo (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) won by fall at heavyweight in 3:08.

The wins, in Kutztown's first two duals of the season, not only avenged losses from a year ago but gave the Golden Bears their first 2-0 start since they began the 2009-10 season with three straight victories.

Kutztown hits the mats again at the Penn State Open on December 4.
