KUTZTOWN, Pa. (November 22, 2011) - The Kutztown University women's basketball team returns to non-conference play when the University of Sciences visits Keystone Arena on November 23 at 1:00 PM.
The Golden Bears (1-3 overall) are looking for their first non-conference win of the 2011-12 season, but are already 1-1 at home.
Junior
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) has been Kutztown's leading scorer thus far, pouring 18.8 points per game on 56 percent shooting from the floor. Wood is also 10-of-16 (63 percent) from three-point range and has a team-high nine assists.
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) poured in 24 points against Gannon and is now second on the team at 12.2 ppg. The Golden Bears' top reserve, she has hit 19-of-21 free throws (91 percent) and pulls in 5.0 rebounds per game.
Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) hit a career-high four three-pointers over VSU and trails only Wood on the roster in terms of made threes. For the year, she has tallied 8.8 ppg.
Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) leads the team on the glass with 6.8 rpg and has blocked three shots to go along with 6.3 ppg.
Kutztown has shot just 38 percent from the floor as a team, but has been strong from both the perimeter and the charity stripe. Paced by Wood's blistering shooting from behind the arc, the Golden Bears are hitting 37 percent as a team from three-point range. At the foul line, both Wood and Hodgson are hitting over 90 percent, propelling Kutztown to an exceptional 77 percent.
Sciences picked up a 64-62 win in a nailbiter between the two teams last season in Philadelphia.
Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) had a double-double, while both Wood and Sisson reached double figures. Caitlin Shaw had 19 points for the Devils.
Sciences enters the game with a record of 1-2 with a win over St. Thomas Aquinas in the season opener.
Freshman Brianne Traub has been a force for the Devils, leading the team with both 18.7 ppg and 8.7 rpg. She is hitting 46 percent from the field and 74 percent from the line.
Junior Elisabeth Birman has been Sciences' second option, hitting for 13.7 ppg on 53 percent shooting. She has been exceptional at the foul line, knocking down 15-of-16. Her 11 assists also lead the team.
After the duo of Traub and Birman, four players average between 7.7 and 8.7 ppg.
The Devils are hitting 40 percent as a team from the field, but have hit just seven threes as a team on 23 percent shooting. Sciences is hitting an astounding 79 percent at the charity stripe.
