WEEK 10 PREVIEW: No.13 Kutztown eyes the prize as it hosts No.12 Bloomsburg for Homecoming

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (November 2, 2011)—The time has finally come. It's no coincidence that some of the biggest collegiate football games will take place on Saturday. Fans will witness the decisive matchup between the Kutztown University football team and Bloomsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game on Saturday, Nov. 5 at University Field. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. (GAME NOTES)

The Golden Bears (8-1 overall, 5-1 PSAC East) are ranked 13th in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll and 15th in the d2football.com poll. The Huskies (8-1 overall, 5-1 PSAC East) are ranked one spot ahead of KU at 12th in the AFCA poll and 11th in the d2football.com poll. Kutztown and Bloomsburg are the only PSAC schools that have been ranked in both the AFCA poll and d2football.com poll all season.

In addition to the game, Kutztown will also celebrate its Homecoming. For ticket prices, please CLICK HERE.

The game will be broadcast live on WEEU-830 AM based out of Reading beginning at 12:50 p.m. with the pregame show. Mitch Gerhart and Steve Hahn will call the action. Fans throughout the world can listen to the game at www.kubears.com. In addition, the game will air live on KUTV, which is Service Electric Channel 24 and Hometown Utilicom Channel 28 in Kutztown and eastern Berks County. Service Electric Channel 2 in the Lehigh Valley will air the game on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 10 a.m.

Kutztown defeated West Chester, 24-0, at John A. Farrell Stadium last week. Bloomsburg lost control of the East when it fell to C.W. Post 24-21 in its first loss of the year last Saturday. It also saw its 12-game PSAC East winning streak snapped with the loss, also breaking a nine-game home winning streak for the Huskies. BU is now 73-2 and when leading after three quarters under head coach Danny Hale.

Bloomsburg leads the all-time series against Kutztown 43-20-1 and defeated KU 61-35 last season. KU's perfect 9-0 record last year was snapped after the loss to the Huskies. In addition, the Huskies have won the last 18 games over the Golden Bears. The last time Kutztown was victorious over BU was a 17-10 decision in 1992.

This game will ultimately serve as the fate of each team as they contend for a share of the PSAC East divisional title and is probably the most anticipated game of the conference this year. This game is about more than bragging rights and pride, but this serves as a determent for each team's season.
C.W. Post, BU, and KU each have one conference loss this season. If Kutztown defeats BU, and C.W. Post defeats Cheyney this week, KU and C.W. Post will share the regular season title of PSAC East Division Champions. If Bloomsburg defeats Kutztown, and the Pioneers defeat Cheyney, Bloom and C.W. Post will share the title.

This game holds so much purpose for the Golden Bears as their season has been filled with many projected memories, which gives them more incentive to garner a win against the Huskies. However, the game won't be a walk in the park for either team, as the best offensive teams in the PSAC square up for the challenge. Kutztown was picked to finish the season second in the PSAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, behind Bloomsburg and now the time has come to see what team walks away victorious.

Kutztown enters the game as the PSAC leader in scoring offense, averaging 40 points a game. The Huskies closely follow, averaging 36.6 points a contest. However, KU leads the conference in total offense, tossing 496.4 yards a game, 77 yards more than BU.

Bloomsburg tops the PSAC in rushing offense (259 yards/game), while Kutztown is second (233.6 yards/game).

Robbie Frey (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) and Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) each rushed for triple digits against West Chester.  Frey had a game-high 154 yards on 21 carries. Frey is averaging 105.4 yards/game on the ground and is ranked third in the PSAC in rushing.  Frey is also 20th in Division II in rushing. He has nine rushing touchdowns this season which is the most by a KU running back since 2002.

Mastromatto turned in a career-high performance and rushed for 132 yards on 21 carries and is second on the team in rushing (63.8).  It is also the second time this season the duo has each reached the triple-digit mark in a game.

Bloomsburg also has its one-two punch combination in rushing in Franklyn Quiteh and Eddie Mateo who are 14th and 17th respectively in Division II in rushing. Quiteh leads the PSAC in rushing (115.1) and Mateo is second (111.1). Mateo was limited to 63 rushing yards last week but it was enough to give him 1,000 yards on the season.

Kutztown quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) who has been more than consistent, has helped KU score at least 35 points in seven games this year. Morton has thrown 106 passes over four games without an interception.  He leads the PSAC in pass efficiency (163.2) with 172 passes completed of 267 attempts. KU's offensive line has been top-notch this season, and is sixth in the PSAC in sacks allowed at 2.00 per game.

Kutztown freshman kicker Jack Ruggieri (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) is one of two PSAC kickers to remain perfect on extra-point attempts. He is 51-for-51 on points after touchdowns (PATS) and is two shy of tying the school record (53) set by Matt Dineen (Wilmington, De/Concord) last season.

Quarterback Pat Carey has 11 passing touchdowns this season and completed 13-of-26 passing attempts for 224 yards and two touchdowns in the biggest rally in NCAA Division II history to beat West Chester on Oct. 22.

Defensively, KU's Brett Moss (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) is a threat to all opponents as he leads the PSAC in sacks and is sixth in Division II in sacks/game (1.11). Kutztown's defense will have to be sharp against the Huskies and will also look for efforts from Andrew Hodges (Ridley, PA/Ridley), last week's PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week,  English Peay (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington), John Kreuer (York, PA/York Suburban) and Jason Henshaw (West Chester, PA/Henderson) , and Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown).

BU's Jarrett Pidgeon recorded 12 tackles last week. It was his third game in a row with double-digit tackles. Pidgeon is second in the PSAC in tackles, averaging 9.3 tackles per game.

Currently Kutztown is set to host Gannon University on Saturday, Nov.12. The outcome of the Kutztown and Bloomsburg game will determine the remainder of KU's regular season schedule.
