Morton and Monica earn top postseason honors as Kutztown places 10 on All-PSAC team

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (November 16, 2011) – The Kutztown University football team has a chance to rewrite history this weekend and will have some postseason recognition to bring along with it.  The Golden Bears had 10 players selected to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division teams highlighted by Offensive Player of the Year Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) and Coach of the Year Raymond Monica.

This is the second straight year Morton and Monica have been honored with the conference's yearly awards.

Along with Morton, seven Golden Bears were named to the All-PSAC first team.  Junior offensive lineman Aaron McGlynn (Harleysville/Souderton), senior wide receiver Erik Frazier (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown), junior linebacker Andrew Hodges (Ridley, PA/Ridley), junior offensive lineman Nick Maloney (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown), junior defensive back Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown), and junior running back and return specialist Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) were each named to the first team.

Earning a spot of the second team was a trio of KU seniors.  Running back Robbie Frey (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton), defensive tackle Jason Henshaw (West Chester, PA/Henderson) and defensive end Brett Moss (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) all earned first-time All-conference selections on Wednesday.

Kutztown (10-1) received its second-straight bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs, earning the No. 3 seed in Super Region One.   As a result, the Golden Bears will host Concord University, the sixth seed, Saturday, November 19 at noon at University Field.

The winner will advance to take on the No. 2 seed, New Haven (which receives a first round bye), on November 26.  Kutztown won its first-ever PSAC title in last week's 21-14 comeback win against Slippery Rock.  Concord is the champion of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Mountain Lions are 7-3 overall.

Kutztown enters the contest ranked sixth by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and tenth by d2football.com. It is the highest ranking in school history.  KU has been in the AFCA top poll every week this season.  The Golden Bears have never been nationally-ranked for an entire season.

Monica received the conference's top coaching honor for the second straight season after guiding the Golden Bears to its first-ever PSAC title.  Kutztown has gone 20-3 in the past two seasons under Monica, who is in his sixth year at the helm of the Golden Bears. He has 37 wins as the head coach of KU and is one away from moving into third place, tying Dave Keeny.

A Harlon Hill candidate as the top player in Division II, Morton has become one of the top quarterbacks in KU history.  Morton is currently second in KU history with 85 touchdown passes and 8,220 passing yards.  Ahead of Morton is Andy Breault with 86 TDs and 9,096 career passing yards.  He is also second in completions with 623.  His 27-for-30 (90%) throwing percentage against ESU is believed to be a school record for highest percentage with at least 25 completions.

Morton established a school-record this season of throwing at least one touchdown pass in 21 straight games. During his time at KU, he has thrown at least two TDs in 23 of Kutztown's last 28 games. With Morton under center, Kutztown has scored 914 points in its last 24 games (38.08/game). Additionally, Kutztown has scored 30 or more points 22 times since Morton made his first start against West Chester in Week 4 of 2009. Morton threw for a school-record 458 yards on 28-for-46 accuracy against C.W. Post.  He threw a career-best six touchdown passes against Saint Anselm in the 2011 season-opener.

Morton has 8,898 yards of total offense in his career, good for 11th in PSAC history.  He is tied for 13th with 8,220 passing yards, eighth with 85 passing TDs and tenth with 625 completions.  He has thrown for 2,666 yards this season.

Protecting Morton this season have been junior offensive linemen McGlynn and Maloney.  Kutztown is sixth in the PSAC in sacks allowed at 1.82 per game and is one of the top offenses in the conference.  KU is first in scoring offense (39.4) and total offense (483.8), and is third in passing offense (274.0) and rushing offense (209.8).

Frazier and Mastromatto were both second-team selections in 2010 and have become two of the most electrifying performers at their positions.

Frazier had two TD catches including the game-winner against Slippery Rock.  Frazier leads KU with 52 catches and 780 receiving yards this season. He has seven TD catches.  He is sixth in the PSAC in receptions per game (4.7) and seventh in receiving yards (70.9).  Frazier notched his third 100-yard receiving game of the year in the victory over C.W. Post three weeks ago.  He had a career-high 173 yards on ten catches.

Mastromatto was recognized as a first-team selection as both a running back and return specialist.  He leads the PSAC and is fourth in Division II in kick return yardage (31.85/game).  He had an 83-yard return for a touchdown against Bloomsburg, and is the only player in the PSAC with two kickoff return TDs this season.  His 100-yard kickoff return against ESU was the longest in KU history.  Mastromatto is the 17th player in conference history to have a full-field kickoff return for a touchdown.  The junior has nine touchdowns this season (four rushing, three receiving, two kickoff return).  Mastromatto has scored 23 touchdowns in KU's last 22 games.

Defensively, Hodges and DiNolfi each received postseason recognition for the first time.  Hodges leads the team with 95 tackles this season and is third in the PSAC in tackles per game (8.6). He was also named the PSAC Athlete of the Week earlier this season for his ten tackles against C.W. Post on Oct. 22.

DiNolfi has a conference-leading nine interceptions this season and is second in Division II (0.82/game).  The KU record for a season is ten (Kevin Keeler, 1976). DiNolfi is third on the team with 55 tackles along with five pass breakups.

The transfer from the University of Connecticut has made an immediate impact with the Golden Bears.  Frey has rushed for over 100 yards in six games and is 28th in Division II, averaging 98.20 rushing yards a game.  Frey is fourth in the PSAC in rushing.  He leads KU with ten rushing touchdowns this season.  Frey's ten rushing touchdowns are the most by a KU running back since 2002 (Stephen Gammage, 14). Frey is also ranked 49th in Division II in all-purpose yards (128.00).

Kutztown has rushed for more than 200 yards in six games this season.  The Golden Bear rushing attack finished the regular season ranked third in the PSAC and 30th in Division II, averaging 209.82 yards a game.  Frey leads KU with 98.20 yards per game, followed by Mastromatto at 55.55.

Henshaw and Moss are each first-time selections to the All-PSAC team.  Henshaw is a four year member of the Golden Bears.  The senior is third on the team with 55 tackles and has two total sacks this season.  He has 125 tackles in his career, including 11 for a loss, four sacks and three quarterback hurries.

Moss leads KU with 12.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss.  He leads the PSAC and is fourth in Division II in sacks per game (1.18).  He is fifth in the PSAC and tenth in Division II in tackles for loss (1.82).  The KU record for sacks in a season is 16 (Jay Schiavello, 1980).

Kutztown will be looking for its first-ever playoff win on Saturday when it hosts Concord.
