The Golden Bears (0-2 overall) competed at the WVIAC-CIAA-PSAC Challenge hosted by Shepherd University on Friday and Saturday.
Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) led Kutztown with a career-high four 3-pointers over VSU. The Golden Bears got quick start from a
Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) jumper, followed by a layup from freshman
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) to push KU to a 4-2 lead with 18:15 remaining. VSU's Mariame Sylla tied the game 4-4 with a layup, but Zewe came through with another jump shot to give KU a 6-4 advantage, its only lead of the game with 16:14 left in the first half.
Virginia State (1-0 overall) went on a 5-0 run for the next five minutes, until a pair of
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) free throws sliced VSU's lead to 15-8 with 11:34 remaining. After VSU's Brianna Holt responded with a 3-pointer, the Trojans led the rest of the first half by double figures until Zewe cut the lead to 35-26 with a free throw shot with 1:23 left. Kutztown trailed 35-27 at halftime.
Sisson showcased her range and opened the second half with a 3-pointer slicing the deficit to 35-30 and bringing the Golden Bears within its closest reach of the second half, with 19:30 remaining.
Virginia State's offense took reign and held on to its lead for the entire second half.
Sisson finished with a team-high 14 points. She was 4-for-9 from the 3-point range. Last season, Sisson led the Golden Bears in 3-pointers made with 52. Additionally she made at least one 3-pointer in 23 games for Kutztown in the 2010-11 season.
Zewe recorded nine points and was 4-for-6 from the field. She also grabbed four rebounds.
Hodgson tallied eight points on the Trojans and was 3-for-6 shooting. Hodgson was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) led the Golden Bears in rebounds with six. Wood also added seven points. As a team, KU collected 29 rebounds.
Virginia State scored 22 points off KU turnovers. VSU's bench outscored KU's 39-20. Virginia State had three players reach double figures in scoring. Holt led the Trojans with 15 points. Sylla finished with 11 points and Da'Shae Jones added 10. VSU shot 30-for-50 (54.5%) throughout the game.
Kutztown returns back to action when it hosts Clarion University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in its home-opener on Saturday, Nov.19. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
