KU grabs win over Mercyhurst on Senior Day

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (October 8, 2011)—Brittany Harman (Hanover, PA/South Western) finished with a team-high 10 kills to help the Kutztown University women's volleyball team defeat Mercyhurst College 3-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover game, Saturday afternoon at Keystone Arena. The Golden Bears (17-6 overall, 6-5 PSAC East) defeated the Lakers (12-10 overall, 5-6 PSAC West) by scores of 25-20, 25-20, and 26-24. Mercyhurst won the second game 25-15.

Saturday's game was also Senior Day. Fans and members of the KU Volleyball team and coaching staff honored the senior class of Cali Snell (York, PA/York Suburban), Cait Hess (Newark, DE/St. Mark's), Katie Lutz (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle Antrim), Lindsey Smith (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic), and Erin Kissling (York, PA/Central York).

Kutztown finished with 39 kills and 11 team blocks. Brianna Risch (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) finished with four blocks followed by Snell, Hess, and Lutz recording four block assists.

Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) and Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) combined for 31 assists. Smith tied her career-high in digs with 32 against the Lakers.

Harman and Kissling topped off the night by recording 17 digs. Kissling also added nine kills in the victory.

The Golden Bears will travel to Cheyney University on Tuesday, Oct. 11 for a PSAC East contest set to begin at 7 p.m.

About the seniors:
Cali Snell (York, PA/York Suburban) is a four-year starter for the Golden Bears.  She has 683 kills in her career. She is sixth all-time in KU history with 333 total blocks.  On Oct.7, 2011, she set a career high with 18 kills in KU's 3-2 victory over Gannon.  She was also a member of the 2010 PSAC East second team.  Snell is a Political Science major from York, PA.

Katie Lutz (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle Antrim) has 381 career kills in her time as a Golden Bear.  She is fifth all-time in KU history with 361 total blocks in her career.  She led the PSAC with 154 blocks last season including a school-record 20-block performance against West Chester.  She was a member of the 2010 PSAC East second team last season.  Lutz is an Elementary Education major from Greencastle, PA,

Lindsey Smith (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) has been the catalyst for this year's team.  She leads the team this season with 401 digs and 20 service aces. Smith is fifth all-time in KU history with 1,321 digs. She had a career-high 32 digs earlier this season in KU's victory against The College of Saint Rose.  Lindsey is a Sports Management major from Hanover, PA.

Cait Hess (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) transferred to Kutztown in 2009 and made an immediate impact for the Golden Bears.  She was second on the team last season with 229 kills, and leads KU this year with 176.  Earlier this season, Cait reached a milestone of 1,000 kills and enters the match with 1,080 for her career. Cait is also a Sports Management major from Newark, DE.

Erin Kissling (York, PA/Central York) is third on the team in kills this season with 159. She also has 210 digs along with 17 total blocks this season.  In her career, she has totaled 462 kills.  She had a career-high 16 kills earlier this season in KU's win over Davis & Elkins.  Erin is an Elementary Education major from York, PA.
