KUTZTOWN, Pa. (October 8, 2011) – The Kutztown University football team kept its fans on their feet all day with a bevy of big plays in route to a 49-32 victory over East Stroudsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup Saturday afternoon at University Field.
The Golden Bears (5-1 overall, 2-1 PSAC East) piled up over 600 yards of total offense for the second time this season with 621 against the Warriors (1-5, 0-3).  KU led from start to finish as it was able to score early and often in one of its best all-around games of the season.
Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) set a KU school record after he returned a 100-yard kickoff for a touchdown late in the first half to put KU up 28-13.  The previous long was a 95-yard return by Kevin Wimberly in 1997, coincidentally, against East Stroudsburg.
Mastromatto totaled a career-high 291 all-purpose yards in the victory, 17 short of the school record set by Elfren Quiles in 2007.  He rushed for 96 yards on six carries, including a 50-yard clincher in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for ESU.  He also hauled in 57 receiving yards and has become one of KU's most consistent players, scoring 18 touchdowns in his last 17 games.
Kutztown rushed for 351 total yards, the most since its season-opening win against Saint Anselm.
Robbie Frey (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) seemed to bounce off of or break every Warrior tackle Saturday on his way to a career day on the ground.  The senior ran for a season-high 158 yards on 22 carries to lead the second-ranked rushing offense in the PSAC.  He rushed for a pair of touchdowns, from two and 15 yards.
The duo of Mastromatto and Frey makes KU a threat on every kick return.  Kutztown averaged 50.2 yards/return Saturday to increase its season average to 31.9.  KU entered the game ranked third in Division II in return yardage.
The talent at quarterback was at a premium Saturday at University Field.  KU's
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) and ESU's Ray Wagner combined for over 800 passing yards and four total TD's.  Morton couldn't make a mistake if he tried Saturday. He completed 27-of-30 passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns.  He also rushed for a season-high 56 yards including a 47-yard scamper on the second play of the third quarter.  He now has 19 TD passes this season and has thrown two or more TD passes in a game in 20 of his last 23 games.
As high of a level that the KU offense proved to be Saturday, the Golden Bear defense showed they have what it takes to cause turnovers and make some big plays of their own.  Senior linebacker
John Kreuer (York, PA/York Suburban) had one of three KU interceptions, and managed to take his 60 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Andrew Hodges (Ridley, PA/Ridley) and
Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) each picked off Wagner as well.  DiNolfi leads KU with five interceptions this year as the KU defense has now forced a turnover in 16 of its last 18 games.
KU returned home this week in hopes of starting another winning streak after last week's letdown to Shippensburg.  It ran its offense with little to no problems Saturday and seems to be past the minor speed bump on its way into the second half of the season.
"I'm extremely proud of how out team responded this week," head football coach Raymond Monica said.  "After last week, we had our backs to the wall and we found out a lot about our football team today.  This was a physical, draining, wide-open football game, and it was fun to watch.  I'm as proud of how they responded as I've ever been for any team I've been a part of."
Erik Frazier (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown) notched his second 100-yard receiving game of the year.  He had 118 yards on eight catches, including a 25-yard strike from Morton to open the game.  Frazier leads KU with 407 receiving yards this season and is averaging 67.8 yards/game.
Daniel Gay (York, PA/West York Area) caught his first touchdown of his career against ESU.  The freshman hauled in a 27-yarder in the second quarter.
Hodges had a game-high 12 tackles and forced a fumble in the KU victory.  DiNolfi chipped in ten tackles.
Bill McMonigle (Drexel Hill, PA/Cardinal O' Hara) recorded KU's lone sack of the afternoon to go along with his four tackles.
Wagner threw for 522 yards on 30-for-50 passing in the Warrior setback.  The senior led an ESU offense that came into Kutztown ranked third in the nation in passing offense, and didn't waste any time showing why with 330 in the first half.
ESU had three receivers bring in over 100 receiving yards.  Robert Bleiler had seven catches for 153 yards.  Wade Williams had four catches for 140 yards including a 59-yard TD catch in the third quarter, and Dusty Reed had a team-high eight catches on his way to a 118-yard performance.
"Give a lot of credit to East Stroudsburg," Monica said.  "We knew they would be a good passing team and knew that four of five big plays would make the difference.  We knew we would need to create turnovers and make them earn it.  This was a big win for us."
Kutztown now hits the road for three straight road contests.  KU travels to Millersville University (2-4, 1-2) next week for a PSAC East showdown under the lights.  Kickoff from Biemesderfer Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
