Wortham's career game guides KU to 49-7 road victory over Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore running back Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) rushed for a career-high 199 yards in the Kutztown University football team's 49-7 victory over Millersville University Saturday evening in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Biemesderfer Stadium.

The Golden Bears (6-1 overall, 3-1 PSAC East) entered the matchup ranked 19th by d2football.com and 20th by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) top poll.

With senior running back Robbie Frey (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) out with a turf toe injury, Wortham stepped in for KU and did a fantastic job.  He had four rushes of over 40 yards, including a 47-yard burst in the third quarter, on his way to a career night.  It is his second triple-digit rushing effort this season and is the most by a KU running back this season.

KU rushed for 281 yards and has now rushed for over 200 yards in five games this season.  KU entered the weekend ranked second in the PSAC and 14th in Division II in rushing yards per game (230.17).

Saturday night's 42-point win over Millersville is the largest in the 85 meetings between the two schools.  The previous record was a 24-0 home victory in 1980.  Kutztown has now won in consecutive games and has clinched its second consecutive winning season.  The last time KU posted back-to-back winning season was in 2000 (7-4) and 2001 (6-4).  KU has also won two straight games against Millersville, after winning 38-28 at University Field last season.

Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) threw four touchdown passes on 15-for-17 passing in the victory.  He threw for 190 yards and just played in the first half.  In the last two games, Morton is a combined 42-for-47 passing (89.36).  He has now thrown at least two TDs in 21 of Kutztown's last 24 games.  Morton currently has 76 career touchdown passes and is second in KU history behind Andy Breault (86).

"Kevin is competitor," head football coach Raymond Monica said.  "You can tell that by his attitude in practice.  It's a different mindset to be able to perform like he does in practice, and he's a key reason why we were able to win tonight."

KU has scored 49 points in four of its last five games.  The 42-point first half onslaught was the most points KU has scored in the first half since 1991 when it put up 46 against Bloomsburg.  It scored a school-record 67 points in the win.  The most KU had scored in the first half this season was 28 points (ESU, Lock Haven, Saint Anselm).

Kutztown found the end zone in its first three possessions of the game on its way to a 21-point first quarter lead.  Additionally, KU scored its opening two touchdowns within the first six minutes of play.

KU capped off the first half with a 51-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Erik Frazier (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown) in the final minute.  Frazier finished with a game-high 59 yards.  Sophomore Troy Foster (Chester, PA/Ridley) hauled in 45 yards.

Andrew Hodges (Ridley, PA/Ridley) intercepted his second pass of the season midway through the second quarter, returning it 19 yards to give the Golden Bear offense the ball within the Marauder 20-yard line.  Morton would cap off the short-field drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Josh Smith (West Lawn, PA/Wilson).  Smith leads KU with six receiving TDs this season.

Hodges led the Golden Bears with ten tackles on the night.  Senior Colin Henny (Lititz, PA/Manheim Twp.) had nine tackles and Brett Moss (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) pitched in a pair of sacks in the victory.  Bill McMonigle (Drexel Hill, PA/Cardinal O' Hara) and Josh Muldowney (Pottsville, PA/Nativy BVM) also had a sack.

English Peay (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) finished with five tackles and capitalized on an opportunity early on.  Early in the second quarter, Peay scooped up a Millersville fumble and took it 45 yards to increase the KU lead to 28-0.  Junior defensive end Brett Moss (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) forced the fumble, and KU has now forced at least one turnover in 17 of its last 19 games.

Sophomore fullback Justin Michalak (Dover, PA/Northeastern) caught the first touchdown of his career in KU's fantastic first quarter in which it scored 21 points.

Freshman kicker Jack Ruggieri (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra points for the fifth time this season.  He is 42-for-42 this season and is one of two PSAC kickers to remain flawless throughout the season.

Millersville (2-5, 1-3) used three quarterbacks Saturday for a total of 97 yards.  MU rushed for 66 total yards led by Ian Sadon with 36 yards rushing.  Marquis White had MU's lone touchdown rush from one yard out, midway through the third quarter.

"Looking ahead, we just have to keep doing what we've been doing the last two weeks," Monica said.  "We still have a long season left with some tough opponents coming up.  We're in the middle of a three-game road trip and we have to take it one game at a time."

The Golden Bears continue their road trip next week for a PSAC East matchup against Long Island University C.W. Post on Saturday, Oct. 22.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.  KU took down the Pioneers, 50-48, in a thriller at University Field last season.
