KUTZTOWN, Pa. (October 5, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's field hockey team suffered a 2-1 setback to West Chester University in a thrilling overtime Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division contest, Wednesday evening at University Field.
(BOXSCORE)
The Golden Bears (7-4 overall, 2-2 PSAC East) entered the game ranked ninth in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Top 10 poll. The Golden Rams (9-2 overall, 4-1 PSAC) are ranked third in the NFHCA Top 10 poll. Last season, WCU competed in the Atlantic 10 conference affiliated with NCAA Division I.
Imani Ferguson (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) got the crowd pumped when she scored her fifth goal of the season with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Ferguson's unassisted goal was released after many attempts from the Golden Bears's offense.
West Chester's Leah Angstadt forced the game into overtime after she scored a goal with five minutes remaining in the second half. Her goal was assisted by Brynn Adams and Michele Schrift off a penalty corner. Kayla Gluchowski scored the game-winning goal four minutes into overtime. Gluchowski's eight goal of the season was assisted by Nicole Fiorilla.
“I think we played a better first half,” Kutztown University head coach Betty Wesner said. “We changed some things on defense which allowed us to be successful in the first half of the game.”
West Chester outshot Kutztown 19-14. However, senior Goalie
Emily Falko (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) recorded 14 saves and was one save short of tying her career-high.
Amy Dando (Marysville, PA/Susquenita) snagged a defensive save off Adam's shot that almost made its way in the box with 14
minutes remaining in the second half.
WCU goalie Kristen Arnold had nine saves against the Golden Bears.
“This is a great group of girls,” Wesner said. “We're a young team but we are not going to hang our heads after this game. We know that we have to go out and play our best because the rest of the games on our schedule are conference games. Our goal is to be one of the top three teams in the East so that we can make it to the playoffs.”
Kutztown will end its regular season finale when it heads to West Chester on Friday, Oct. 21.
The Golden Bears will return back to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 when it hosts Millersville University for a PSAC East matchup beginning at 7 p.m. on University Field.
