Golden Bears spoil C.W. Post’s homecoming with 42-30 victory

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Passing was at a premium Saturday afternoon as a pair of Kutztown receivers set career-highs in the Kutztown University football team's victory over Long Island University C.W. Post.  KU rolled to a 42-30 win in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division road matchup from Hickox Field.

Erik Frazier (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown) and Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) haven't been strangers in the KU offensive attack this season, and they were both able to break out with impressive performances Saturday.  Frazier hauled in ten catches for 173 yards to lead KU's 458 total receiving yards.  Mastromatto had eleven catches in the victory for 131 yards.  Both were career highs.  He ended the day with 217 all-purpose yards.

With the victory, Kutztown (7-1 overall, 4-1 PSAC East) now has the second-most wins in school history with three regular season games to go. KU's ten wins last season is the school record.  KU currently sits in second place in the Eastern Division behind Bloomsburg (8-0, 5-0).

Kutztown entered the matchup ranked 19th in Division II by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) top poll and 18th by d2football.com.

"This win was a total team effort," head football coach Raymond Monica said.  "I have to give a lot of credit to our coaching staff not only for getting our team ready for this game, but for coaching our guys during the game to turn little things into big things.  This was a big play game."

Saturday's conference showdown featured a rally of momentum swings and big plays that kept C.W. Post's homecoming crowd on the edge of their seats all day.  Kutztown junior quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) entered the game having completed 42 of his last 47 passes, and didn't waste any time adding to his eye-opening statistics this season.  Morton was a catalyst in KU's 21-point first quarter dominance, going a perfect 9-for-9 with 182 yards on the first three drives of the game.  He finished with 458 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Kutztown had 576 yards of total offense, the third-most this season. It entered the game leading the conference, averaging 501.7 per game.  After its electrifying first quarter, the Pioneers countered with 17 unanswered points to bring KU's lead to four heading into halftime.

Mastromatto had a pair of rushing touchdowns on the afternoon.  Coming out of half, Kutztown drove 81 yards in just over three minutes and was capped with Mastromatto leaping over the goal line for a two-yard TD run, his second of the game.  The junior now has 21 touchdowns in KU's last 19 games.

"This is an exciting team to watch," Monica said.  "Even though C.W. Post had a good second quarter, it's hard to keep a good team down for 60 minutes.  We had the lead at halftime and knew we were getting the ball to start the second half.  We came out and scored right away and did what we had to do to win the game."

Troy Foster (Chester, PA/Ridley) hauled in his first TD catch of the season Saturday and it couldn't have come at a more crucial moment for KU.  With KU up 28-23 early in the fourth quarter, Morton fired a perfect pass with the pocket collapsing to Foster for a 68-yard score. This was Morton's longest pass of the season.  Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) and Josh Smith (West Lawn, PA/Wilson) also caught TD passes for KU.

The Pioneers kept up with KU's prolific offense and continued to apply pressure on the Golden Bear defense.  Following the Foster strike, KU defensive back Corey Harris (Baltimore, PA/Western York) stepped up in a big way to diffuse the possible C.W. Post comeback.  Harris came down with an interception in the end zone, his second of the day, to allow KU to slow the game down and ride to its third straight victory.

Steven Laurino threw for 295 yards in the Pioneers' setback.  He also tossed three TD passes.  The redshirt freshman has been a dual threat for C.W. Post this season and led the team with 50 rushing yards.  Jeff Mack had a team-high 98 receiving yards and a score.

Wortham has continued to see additional carries midway through the season for KU.  The sophomore had a game-high 95 yards on the ground including a 46-yard TD scamper late in the fourth quarter.

"In addition to our usual effort, we had several players step up for injured players," Monica said.  "Cory Darby (District Heights, MD/Wise), Corey Harris (Baltimore, PA/Western York), Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) and Troy Foster (Chester, PA/Ridley) all played great for us today.  I could go on and on about how these guys helped us earn the win."

Defensively, Andrew Hodges (Ridley, PA/Ridley) and Darby led the way with ten tackles apiece.  On top of Harris' two interceptions, junior safety Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) picked off a Laurino pass in the fourth quarter for a return of 22 yards.

KU had seven total sacks, led by Hodges with two.  Senior linebacker John Kreuer (York, PA/York Suburban) had 1.5 sacks, and linemen Colin Henny (Lititz, PA/Manheim Twp.) and Jason Henshaw (West Chester, PA/Henderson) each ended with a sack apiece.

Kutztown now leads the overall series with C.W. Post, 5-1, but has been shown that this team from Long Island can never be taken lightly.

Kutztown travels to West Chester University next weekend for its final road game of the season.  Game-time on Saturday, Oct. 29 is set for 1 p.m.  KU took down WCU, 45-23, last season at University Field.
