Kutztown rebounds with 2-1 win over Mansfield

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (October 1, 2011)—Senior Julie Rosenkaimer (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) of the Kutztown University women's field hockey team scored the game-winning goal to push the Golden Bears to a 2-1 win over Mansfield University, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game Saturday afternoon at University Field. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears (7-3 overall, 2-1 PSAC East) are ranked eighth in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Top 10 poll. The Mountaineers fell to 3-7 overall and are 1-3 in the PSAC West.

Despite her short stature of five feet, two inches Rosenkaimer is full of life and energy. The first thing one may notice about Roskenkaimer is her smile that eludes her vivacious personality.  Her energy is positive and crucial to the Golden Bears. As a role player, she comes off the bench and makes huge contributions. She scored her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute off a penalty corner, giving KU the 2-1 advantage. Her goal was assisted by freshman Katie Stewart (Macungie, PA/Emmaus).

“It felt really good to get that goal,” Rosenkaimer said. “We've been working on those tips off the post in practice because we haven't done so well with them. We finally put it together and I was so excited.”

Roskenkaimer whose name should be Superwoman, spends her time in a pro seminar class for her secondary education program, works at the Student Rec Center on KU's campus, manages the rest of her classes, and pours out her heart on the field.

“I'm always busy,” Roskenkaimer said. “It's my senior year so I have so much motivation to just give my all to field hockey, school, and the other things I'm involved in.”

Also motivating Kutztown's offense was Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) when she initiated the scoring drive in the second minute of the game. Labowitz's eighth goal of the season was assisted by Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) off a penalty corner.

Mansfield's Kristyn Grunza recorded her sixth goal of the year when she responded to Rosenkaimer's goal in the 56th minute.

KU outshot MU 29-4. Goalie Kristie Rollman was busy for the Mountaineers and recorded 11 saves. As a team, Mansfield recorded five defensive saves.

Goalie Emily Falko (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) notched two saves against Mansfield.

Kutztown found its rhythm and used its 5-1 loss to Shippensburg on Friday, to fuel it to Saturday's victory.

“We put our heads together after Friday's game to figure out what we needed to do better,” Rosenkaimer said. “To lose a big game like that to Ship who we know that we're on equal playing ground to really got us going today. We knew that today's game against Mansfield was going to be tough because they just lost to West Chester 10-1. Both teams were looking for a win and we just came out really hard and played our game.”

The Golden Bears return to action when they host West Chester University for a PSAC East game on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at University Field.
