Golden Bears have tough 65-51 setback to Cal

CALIFORNIA, Pa. (January 8, 2011)—Senior Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds but it wasn't enough to help the Kutztown women's basketball team during a 65-51 setback to California (Pa.) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover contest at Hamer Hall Saturday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears fell to 7-4 overall while Cal improved to 8-3. McQuade moved passed Missy Boettger and into fourth place on the KU all-time scoring list. McQuade now has 1,337 points and 809 rebounds in her career.

Also climbing up the KU all-time list was senior guard Meredith Starr (Richmond, VA/Monacan). With her two assists against the Vulcans, Starr moved into fourth place on the KU all-time assist list. She now has 338 for her career and passed Patti Kline.

Kutztown battled from behind for most of the game. The Golden Bears' only lead of the game was 7-6 following a jumper from Starr. KU had a tough shooting half and  28-18 halftime deficit. However the Golden Bears pulled to within, trailing 36-35, following McQuade's 3-pointer with 10 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the second half. Unfortunately, the Vulcans didn't allow the Golden Bears to get any closer as Cal's Amy Johns delivered a career-high 31 points. John's also hit double figures in rebounds with 12.

PSAC East player of the week Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) recorded nine points for KU. Kristen Murray (Harrisburg, PA/Trinity), Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley), and Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) combined for 19 points.

Kutztown will travel to Indiana tomorrow for more PSAC crossover action beginning at 1 p.m. IUP defeated East Stroudsburg 86-18 Saturday afternoon. CLICK HERE TO FOLLOW LIVE STATS OF KU VS. IUP
