CHEYNEY, Pa. (January 31, 2011)—Sophomore Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) helped guide the Kutztown University women's basketball team with 23 points in the Golden Bears' 83-61 win over Cheyney University, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern division game, Monday evening at Cope Hall. The Golden Bears improve to 10-8 overall, 3-3 PSAC East and the Wolves dropped to 5-13,1-5 PSAC East. KU bounced back from a tough 63-59 loss from Millersville on Saturday.
Kutztown saw a surge in offense and had three other Golden Bears to reach double digits in scoring. The last time KU scored 80 or more points was in its 86-58 victory over Slippery Rock on Jan. 4.
Wood recorded her 11th double figure game in scoring and sizzled from the 3-point range, where she was 6-for-8. From the field, Wood shot 7-for-14. She also led the team in assists with six.
Senior Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) added 13 points and 16 rebounds to up her career scoring total to 1,459 and rebounding number to 884. It was McQuade's fourth double-double in seven career games against Cheyney.
Recently named PSAC East freshman of the Week Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) showed why she was worthy of the award. Sisson dropped 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. She leads the PSAC in 3-point percentage this season (.488) and is leading KU with 43 3-pointers made. Kutztown also leads the PSAC in 3-point percentage as a team (.406). Sisson has made a 3-pointer in every game this season.
Junior Brittany LeVan (Centre Hall, PA/Penns Valley) tallied 12 points was 4-for-7 from the field and was perfect from the free throw line, making all four attempts.
The Golden Bears used their 45-35 advantage at intermission to push pass the Wolves. A pair of free throws from LeVan gave KU a solid 67-47 lead with 10 minutes, 5 seconds remaining. There were many attempts from CU, but Kutztown was still enjoying the ride. With eight minutes, 33 seconds left the Wolves cut KU's 67-52 lead to 15 with a jumper from Brittany Jenkins and free throw from Nadirah Brown. That was the closest Cheyney would get to KU as continued to dominate offensively.
Brown led CU with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Also recording a double-double for the Wolves was Christalee Lynch with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Kutztown returns to action when it hosts Mansfield University on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 6pm.
