KUTZTOWN, PA (April 6, 2010) – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team suffered a tough loss at home to West Chester, dropping a 22-9 decision in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest on Tuesday afternoon. (Boxscore)
The Golden Bears sent a scare to unbeaten, fifth-ranked West Chester with one of their best all-around halves of the season, trailing only 8-7 at half . KU was full of energy, winning face-offs and immediately getting into the scoring zone on offense. The Golden Bears defense swarmed the ball handler and contested each WCU shot.
The Rams scored one minute, 13 seconds into the game, but KU retaliated with three unanswered goals. Leann Pica scored first for the Golden Bears at 28:18, followed by Emily Savini at 25:30. Megan Schwar (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg) found the back of the net after being fed a perfect pass from Janice Kinney.
The Golden Bears headed into the intermission on a high note, scoring three of the final four goals of the half. Sophomore Rachel Mehaffey scored her second goal of the half with 4:34 remaining. Freshman Amanda Bushong netted two goals in under three minutes, her second coming with only six seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one.
Kinney used her speed and athleticism to score a second half goal. She ran to her left, hit the breaks and shifted left making her defender fall to the grass. After getting to a one-on-one with the keeper, Kinney ripped a shot with ease into the net.
Pica tallied her second goal late in the half with the help of a nice dish by Mehaffey.
Freshman goalkeeper Karly Waltman had eight saves on the day, including five in the first half.
KU returns to action when it travels to Lock Haven on Saturday for a 1 p.m. PSAC crossover contest.
