Kutztown has rally to remember in victory over Philadelphia University

KUTZTOWN, PA (April 19, 2010) – Seniors Janice Kinney and Samantha Crist will always remember their final game on the sacred Keystone Field green grass. Both players were key factors as Kutztown celebrated senior day with a memorable 12-11 triumph over Philadelphia University in a non-conference match Monday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears overcame a pair of three-goal deficit to raise their overall record to 3-10 on the season. However, it was a team effort that helped the Golden Bears earn a triumph to savor. Amanda Bushong put home a Lindsey Crits pass with 1 minute, 47 seconds remaining to give Kutztown the lead for good, 11-10. It was also the Golden Bears' first lead of the game.

Rachel Mehaffey finished off a brilliant 20-minute scoring spree by tallying an insurance goal with 36 seconds remaining. Mehaffey's eight-meter shot was set up by Emily Savini, who picked the ball out of the air to stop a Philadelphia University attack. Savini then passed the ball to Mehaffey, who scored all four of her goals in the second half.

Also finishing with four goals for the Golden Bears was Crits. Kinney had a pair of assists and a goal for Kutztown, which overcame some adversity in the second half to rally past the Rams.

Trailing 9-6 in the second half following a Jessica Burton goal with 19 minutes, 16 seconds remaining, Kutztown went to work and controlled the contest. After Mehaffey's third goal of the half tied the game, 10-10, with 2 minutes, 33 seconds remaining, the crowd went wild.

However, the crowd was just getting warmed up. Before the next face-off, the Philadelphia University coach asked the referees conduct a stick check. Mehaffey passed and then she continued her assault on the Philadelphia net.

Kutztown goalie Karly Waltman had several key saves, including a late one-on-one opportunity. Waltman stared down the Ram player and stoned her. Waltman finished with 15 saves for the Golden Bears. Jen Dunne led Kutztown with six ground balls. Leann Pica and Megan Schwar combined for nine ground balls.

Kutztown returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Millersville University for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game beginning at 4 p.m.
