No. 25 Kutztown takes two at Goldey-Beacom

WILMINGTON, DEL. (April 18, 2010) – Maria Schiavo continued her torrid hitting and Katlin Arbogast and Monica Glomb turned in stellar pitching performances to lead the Kutztown University softball team to a sweep of Goldey-Beacom College Sunday afternoon at Churchman Field. The Golden Bears won both games, 7-3 and 8-0. (GAME 1 BOXSCORE) / (GAME 2 BOXSCORE)

Schiavo finished the doubleheader with four hits to extend her hitting streak to a season-high 11 games. For Schiavo it was her 18th multi-hit game of the season and the sixth time she had at least three hits in the same game. In the opening game, Schiavo also scored two runs and knocked in two runs.

Overall, the Golden Bears (37-14 overall) extended their string of double digit hits to three games. Kutztown had 10 hits in the opening game and 11 in the abbreviated nightcap. Heather Hannum also had a pair of hits in the opening game for Kutztown. Arbogast won her 96th career game and raised her strikeout total to 986.

In the second game, Katie Lynch, Nicole Henninger and Krista Tedjeske all had two hits each. Tedjeske drove in three runs and Schiavo scored twice. Glomb was masterful as she allowed two hits in four innings. Stephanie Pritchard pitched the fifth inning to earn the save. Lynch extended her hitting streak to eight games.

The first game was a tense drama for three innings as Goldey-Beacom answered KU's three-run first inning with a three spot in the bottom of the third. However, the Golden Bears took the lead for good, 4-3, on Schiavo's RBI single in the top of the fourth inning scored Isgro. The Golden Bears added some insurance with a three-run sixth inning.

In the second game, Kutztown's six run fourth inning proved to be the difference. Ten Golden Bears came to the plate. The big hits were delivered by Tedjeske and Lynch, each of whom had two-run singles during the uprising. Also contributing RBIs in the fourth inning was Henninger with a single and Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami)'s sacrifice fly.

Lauren Witzke had two hits in the opening game to lead Goldey-Beacom (14-21).

Kutztown concludes the regular season Tuesday afternoon when it hosts University of the Sciences at North Campus Field beginning at 2:30 p.m. Pairings and times for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division playoffs should be announced sometime Monday afternoon.
