Kutztown needs help to claim East's top seed after splitting with ESU

KUTZTOWN, PA (April 16, 2010) – The Kutztown University softball team is now the biggest fans of the Millersville Marauders – only for a few hours.

Following their 2-1 loss and 7-0 victory against East Stroudsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader Friday afternoon, the Golden Bears must hope Millersville sweeps West Chester Saturday afternoon to claim the East's top seed in the upcoming PSAC playoffs. (GAME 1 BOXSCORE) / (GAME 2 BOXSCORE)

Otherwise, Kutztown will head to Bloomsburg next weekend as the No. 2 East seed and join either the West's third seed Edinboro or Mercyhurst in a PSAC playoff pod.

The Golden Bears (34-13 overall, 12-4 PSAC East) bounced back from their first game defeat by pounding out 11 hits and riding the strong arm of Monica Glomb, who tossed her third shutout of the season. Glomb was masterful as she allowed three hits and struck out seven batters.

Nicole Colineri, Katie Lynch, Nicole Henninger and Maria Isgro had two hits each for the Golden Bears in the second game. Glomb's effort was big-time and it was needed as it took some time for the KU bats to awaken. Kutztown scored all seven of its runs in the nightcap over the final four innings.

Lynch and Henninger started the fourth inning with consecutive singles. Lynch came around to score on an ESU error. Run scoring hits by Henninger, Michelle McGinty and Isgro produced four runs and helped Kutztown open a comfortable 5-0 advantage. Henninger's groundout in the sixth inning scored Schiavo, who was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning. That expanded KU's lead to 6-0.

Brianna Knipe punctuated Kutztown's offensive outburst by slugging a home run to left field. During the game, Lynch also tripled and Schiavo doubled. Colineri extended her hitting streak to eight games with her 12th multi-hit effort of the season. Schiavo stretched her hitting to seven games. Also, Lynch's two hits in the second game was the 10th time this season she enjoyed a multi-hit performance.

In the opening game, Colineri had two hits and scored the Golden Bears' only run of the game. She came home when Lynch smacked a first inning double. The loss spoiled a terrific outing from pitcher Katlin Arbogast (Ambler, PA/Wissahickon), who struck out 10 hitters. Henninger walked twice in the opening game.

The Warriors scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning of the opening game to beat Kutztown for the second time this season. The Golden Bears had chances to tie the game as they had a runner on third base in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. The seventh was particularly frustrating for Kutztown as Isgro led off with a double and Jennifer Stow reached on an infield hit to put runners at the corners with nobody out.

Kutztown visits Bloomsburg Saturday afternoon for a showdown between the top-two ranked teams in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional poll. The doubleheader between the Golden Bears and Huskies begin at 1 p.m. The Golden Bears also visit Goldey-Beacom College Sunday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.
