Nine KU athletes set to compete for national titles

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University men's basketball team is not the only Golden Bear athletics team participating in NCAA championships this week. The men's and women's indoor track & field, wrestling and women's swimming teams are all sending athletes to the national championships.

Six Kutztown University student-athletes will be participating the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held March 12-13 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
 
On the men's side, individual Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champions William Hodges (Levittown/Neshaminy) and Sean Gentry (Lansdale/North Penn) will compete. Hodges is seeded fourth in the pole vault (16 feet, 7.25 inches) and Gentry is seeded 11th in the high jump (6-10.75).
 
The women will be represented by its school-record holding distance medley relay team of Steph Grimm (Fleetwood/Oley Valley), Jessica Schlecter (Chalfront/Central Bucks South), Rachel Hunte (Chester Springs, PA/Downingtown East) and Keri Brown (Southampton, N.J./Seneca).
 
WRESTLING

The wrestling team will send a trio of athletes to the University of Nebraska-Omaha with the goal of reaching All-American status on March 12-13. Tim Darling (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) (184 pounds) went 4-0 at regionals to take first place and earn his first trip to the national stage. Kevin Bolinsky (Ashland, PA/North Schuylkill) battled through the heavyweight consolation bracket to place third and make his first national appearance. Scott Snyder (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) earned his second consecutive appearance at nationals with a fourth place showing at the regional tournament.

Six Kutztown University student-athletes have qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division II Swimming national championships. The meet will take place from March 10-13 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton (Oh), home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
 
Representing Kutztown University will be Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) , Alexandra Crigler (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) , Heather Wolkom (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional ) , Jordan Shapiro (Yardville, N.J./Princeton) , Nicole Hinsdale and Allison Sheely (Enola, Pa./Trinity). The Golden Bears will also enter an optional 200 free relay, 400 medley relay, 800 free relay, and the 400 free relay.  At press time, Kutztown swimming coach Tim Flannery was not sure what student-athletes would be competing in those relays.
