KU softball goes 1-1 on third day of spring trip

CLERMONT, FL (March 8, 2010) - The Kutztown University finished on both ends of one-run contests on Monday afternoon at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida.

In the opener, the Golden Bears (11-7) had a 3-2 setback to Grand Valley State and bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Assumption College.

All of the scoring occurred in the third inning, with the Golden Bears snagging two runs in the top of the inning. Nicole Colineri and Katie Lynch had back-to-back singles and moved up a base each on a sacrifice by Nicole Henninger. Designated player Michelle McGinty unleashed a double to plate the two runners.

However, the Lakers answered with three runs in their half of the inning. The runs came from two singles, a fielder's choice and two errors.

Katlin Arbogast again kept the Golden Bears in the game with a solid pitching effort. She fired her third-straight complete game, allowing two earned runs on three hits and struck out eight.

Colineri and Lynch did everything in their power to get some offense going. Colineri was 3-for-4, while Lynch reached base in every at-bat with a walk and three singles.

The Golden Bears wasted no time getting on the board in the win over Assumption. Maria Schiavo drew a walk to lead off and Colineri singled. After Lynch moved the runners up with a sacrifice, Henninger ripped a shot that the second baseman couldn't handle to score Schiavo. Brianna Knipe knocked in Colineri with a single to give KU its winning margin.

A double by Lauren Medeiros was the only base runner Monica Glomb allowed through the first four innings. In that time, Glomb had five strike outs before running into trouble in the fifth.

The Greyhounds' Medeiros belted another double and scored on a single two batters later, forcing Kutztown coach Judy Lawes to bring in Arbogast. Arbogast shut the door in the final 2.1 innings, not allowing any base runners and picking up the win.

The Golden Bears will play another set of games on Tuesday, beginning with St. Joseph's (IN) at 5:30 p.m. followed by Post University at 7:30.
