KU softball drops two on first day of spring training

CLERMONT, FL. (March 6, 2010) - The Kutztown University softball team suffered two tough losses, a 4-1 nine inning marathon to Wayne State College and a 4-1 setback to Dominican College on Saturday afternoon at the National Training Center.

The Golden Bears managed only two hits in their fall to Wayne State, but the arm of senior pitcher Katlin Arbogast kept them in the game. Arbogast had 10 strikeouts, marking the second time in the early part of the season she reached double digits.

In the top of the eighth the Wildcats scored with a one out single,
Michelle McGinty ended the extended the game by knocking in Nicole Henninger from second base. The Wildcats pushed across three runners in the top of the ninth and KU was unable to answer back.

Senior Maria Schiavo started a rally in the sixth with a single, but was stranded.

In the second game of the day, the Golden Bear were able to knock out six hits but couldn't string them together against Dominican College. Six different players recorded one hit, including McGinty who knocked in Nicole Colineri for the only KU run. Katie Lynch, Henninger, Heather Hannum and Jennifer Stow each had singles.

Mary Hoch worked the first inning and a third, allowing just an unearned run and no hits. Monica Glomb followed for the next two innings, giving up three hits and two runs. Arbogast finished the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing just one run and striking out three.

The Golden Bears will continue their spring break training on Sunday with a game at 1:30 p.m. against Merrimack and 5:30 against Winona State.
