SHIPPENSBURG, PA (March 31, 2010) – Monica Glomb tossed a gem and Michelle McGinty swung a hot bat to lead the Kutztown University softball team to an 8-2 and 3-0 sweep over Shippensburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Robb Field. GAME 1 BOXSCORE /GAME 2 BOXSCORE
Glomb hurled her best game of the season. It was a Michelangelo-like masterpiece. Glomb struck out eight batters and allowed just two hits. In her last two games, Glomb has registered 18 strikeouts as she had a career-high 10 in her last outing against East Stroudsburg. Glomb only faced one batter above the minimum as Kutztown improved its overall record to 26-9 and 6-2 in the PSAC East.
McGinty's sizzling bat provided plenty of support to Glomb. McGinty collected five hits in the two games. In the second game, McGinty led off the top of the third inning with her first home run of the season and a 1-0 lead. She finished her day by driving home Sarah Couch, who stroked a two-out double, with a single to the right side in the seventh inning that expanded the Golden Bears' advantage to 3-0.
For McGinty, it was her sixth multi-hit game of the season. She also had three hits in a victory over Post during Kutztown's spring break trip.
In the opening game, a five-run third inning proved to be the difference as Kutztown rebounded from its tough 10-inning defeat to East Stroudsburg in its last outing on Saturday.
The Golden Bears banged out 12 hits to start the week off on a good note. Maria Schiavo and McGinty paced the offense with three hits each. Couch had a pair of runs batted in.
Kutztown scored all of its runs in the third inning with two outs. After the first two batters were retired, seven consecutive Golden Bears reached base. Reigning PSAC East hitter of the week Nicole Henninger started the rally with a harmless single back through the middle. Couch drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the first run of the inning. The big hit of the inning was McGinty's two-run single that scored Brianna Knipe and Krista Tedjeske.
By the time Jennifer Stow and Schiavo followed with RBI hits, Kutztown had expanded its advantage to 6-0. That was more than enough for winning pitcher Katlin Arbogast who tossed a complete game and struck out nine batters.
The Golden Bears return to action Friday afternoon when they host West Chester University in a showdown beginning at 2:30 p.m. Kutztown trails West Chester by a game in the PSAC East standings. The two teams split a doubleheader earlier in the season.
