Softball defeats Alderson-Broaddus in thriller

SALEM, VA (March 19, 2010) – The Kutztown University softball team scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Alderson-Broaddus, 5-4, in the Salem Invitational Friday afternoon.

While Maria Schiavo crossed the plate with the winning run and had a third of Kutztown's nine hits, the clutch effort of winning pitcher Monica Glomb proved crucial in the victory. Kutztown raised its overall record to 17-8.

Glomb entered the game with the Battlers in the middle of a three-run game-tying rally in the top of the seventh inning. Glomb buckled down and retired all three batters she faced. The first batter delivered a game-tying sacrifice fly, but that didn't rattle the unflappable Glomb. She squashed the Battlers' momentum by inducing a pair of ground balls from the next two batters to end the inning.

Schiavo started the bottom of the seventh inning with her third single of the game. Nicole Colineri bunted her safely to second base. Katie Lynch and Nicole Henninger were intentionally walked to load the bases. Brianna Knipe scalded a hard-hit ball to the A-B second baseman, who bobbled it, which allowed the decisive run to score.

For six innings, it appeared as if the 24th-ranked Golden Bears wouldn't need any late-inning heroics. Kutztown used the long ball to build a comfortable 4-1 advantage through six innings. Lynch blasted a two-run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Golden Bears a quick 2-0 lead. The teams traded runs in the fourth inning. Knipe accounted for KU's fourth inning run with a solo home run.

Kutztown starting pitcher Katlin Arbogast pitched six innings allowed four hits and struck out a pair of batters.

The Golden Bears have enjoyed playing one-run games this season, compiling a 6-4 record in those contests. The three-day tournament continues Saturday when the Golden Bears will play Fairmont State (11 a.m.) and Seton Hill (5 p.m.).
