Softball splits with West Chester in DH showdown

WEST CHESTER, PA (March 18, 2010) – In a showdown between two of the top teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division, the Kutztown University softball team got the jump in the opening game of a doubleheader against West Chester by claiming a 6-4 victory. However, WCU bounced back to take the second game, 5-4. (Game 1 boxscore | Game 2 boxscore)

The No. 24 Golden Bears ran their overall record to 16-8 and opened up at 1-1 in the PSAC East.

Krista Tedjeske
broke a four all tie in the top of the fifth with a two-run homerun to left center to give Katlin Arbogast  all she support needed in the opener.

With two outs, Michelle McGinty started the rally by drawing a walk and scored on a double by right fielder Maria Isgro to set the stage for Tedjeske's heroics.

In the bottom half of the inning, a one-out double by Sam Ingersoll was the last hit or ball to reach the outfield off of Arbogast over the final three frames. In that time, she recorded three of her five strike outs en route to her 12th complete game of the season.

The Golden Bears got two runs in the top of the third to a hold a short lived 3-1 lead. Nicole Colineri and Katie Lynch had singles to start the inning. Brianna Knipe singled home Colineri and McGinty's fly out to center was enough for Lynch to tag up and score. The Golden Rams chipped away with one run in the bottom of the third and two more in their next at bat.

In the late game, the West Chester was able to overcome a four run Golden Bear inning.

The first four batters reached safely for KU in the third, beginning with a Maria Schiavo double, Colineri single and a walk to Lynch. Nicole Henninger emptied the bases with a double to right center and scored on a McGinty single.

A single by Tedjeske in the sixth was the only baserunner Missy Schwartz would allow from that point on to earn the win for the Golden Rams.

Arbogast took the loss after going the distance for the 13th time for the Golden Bears. She struck out four and allowed five runs.

The Golden Bears will travel to Virginia this weekend for five nonconference contest at the Salem Invitational.
