PEMBROKE, N.C. (February 7, 2010) – Monica Glomb and Katie Lynch earned all-tournament honors as the 14th-ranked Kutztown University softball team won two out of three games Sunday afternoon at the North Carolina-Pembroke season-opening event.
The Golden Bears rode Glomb's arm and some late inning thunder to defeat St. Andrew's College, 9-1, and West Virginia State, 10-2, Sunday afternoon. However, in the final contest of the afternoon, Kutztown dropped a 6-1 decision to host UNC-Pembroke.
The Golden Bears went 3-2 in their first tournament of the season.
“I think we improved and got better as a team with each game,” KU softball coach Judy Lawes said. “Playing as many early season games as possible should continue to help us develop as a team. We'll keep learning more about ourselves as we keep playing.”
In the opening game against St. Andrew's, Glomb tossed a complete game and struck out five batters. She was staked to a 7-0 lead after two innings thanks to an early eruption by the offense. Maria Schiavo was 3-for-3.

KU added four more runs in the second inning. Also, in the opener, Kristen Cornelis was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. Michelle McGinty doubled for Kutztown.
In the second game, Kutztown overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat West Virginia State. The Golden Bears exploded for nine runs in the fifth inning to earn the win. Glomb allowed two hits.
