KUTZTOWN, PA (February 18, 2010) – On Friday evening, the Kutztown University wrestling team will hold Senior Day honors for three wrestlers that will be donning their maroon and gold singlet for the last time in front of a home crowd.
The regular season finale will begin with recognition of the impressive careers that Brett Martinez, Scott Snyder and David Zeek have compiled over the years.
Martinez, wrestling at 141- and 149-pounds through his career, has compiled a 55-47 record. He had a high of 19 wins in 2008-09. In his freshman and sophomore season's, Martinez placed 6th at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships. In 2006-07 Martinez took 5th at the NCAA Atlantic Regional.
“The top four finishers advance to the NCAA Championships,” said Martinez. “So just missing out left a bad taste in my mouth and is something that I want to improve on. My personal goal is to get to nationals this year and make some noise.”
In three seasons with the Golden Bears, Snyder has 53-28 record out of the 197 class. Snyder had an amazing run in 2008-09 finishing 23-9 and placing 5th in the PSAC and 2nd at regionals.
“It has been fun creating a strong relationship with this great group of guys,” said Snyder. “There has always been a lot of potential with our group of wrestlers, this postseason we have high hopes and want to get a lot of people into nationals.”
Zeek, who wrestles at 174 pounds, is currently eighth in KU history in career wins with 65. As a four-year starter, he is 65-40, wrestling at 165 and 174 pounds throughout his career. He had a sixth-place finish at the PSAC meet and a fourth place finish at the NCAA Regionals.
“I messed up in the semis at last year's regional,” said Zeek. “I plan on changing that this year and going out with a bang.”
The three seniors have witnessed firsthand the incredible improvement thewrestling program has gone through over the years.
“I felt we had a good team when I was first got here,” said Martinez. “There were a few holes here and there, but now there are no holes. We are a solid team from top to bottom.”
Head coach Rob Fisher has been grateful and impressed with the dedication shown by his seniors throughout their time at KU.
“In the past we had trouble keeping wrestlers stay until their senior year,” said Fisher. “But these guys stuck it out with our program. It means a lot to me and I hope that things end well for them here.”
The NCAA Super Region I wrestling tournament will take place on Fri. February 26 and Sat. February 27 at the University of Pitt-Johnstown, where the Golden Bears will look to qualify for the NCAA Nationals held at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in March.
