Kutztown women come up short at USP

PHILADELPHIA, PA (December 4, 2010) – The Kutztown University women's basketball dropped a tough 64-62 decision to the University of the Sciences at Bobbi Morgan Arena Saturday afternoon. BOXSCORE

Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler)'s first double-double of the season (17 points, 13 rebounds) wasn't enough to help Kutztown extend its four-game winning streak. She was one of four Golden Bears to reach double figures in points. Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) scored 13 points, the third straight contest she hit for double digits. She scored 10 points after intermission.

Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) contributed 11 points and Kristen Murray (Harrisburg, PA/Trinity) added 10 points and nine rebounds.

McQuade continued her climb up the Kutztown all-time career rebounding and scoring charts. She passed Brianne Homyak and moved into fourth place on the all-time school scoring list with 1,258 points. In addition, McQuade leaped past Robin Avery and into third place on KU's all-time rebounding list with 772.

The Golden Bears (4-2 overall) spent most of the game climbing uphill as they led for brief moments. Kutztown led twice in the final 2 minutes, 32 seconds. The Golden Bears' last lead was 58-56 with 1:56 remaining following a pair of Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) foul shots. Unfortunately for Kutztown, the lead was short-lived as USP's Colleen Christian gave her team the advantage for good with a 3-pointer 22 seconds later.

In winning its second straight contest, USP (3-2) was led in scoring by Caitlin Shaw, who scored 19 points. Marissa Chesnavich had 12 points and nine rebounds. Christian contributed 11 points for the Devils, who led by 11 points on a pair of occasions in the opening half.

The Golden Bears had an early 10-0 burst fueled by Murray, who scored four points and handed out an assist. That run turned an 8-2 deficit into a 12-8 Kutztown advantage with 12:20 remaining in the first half. USP regained control by holding Kutztown scoreless for more than four minutes after both teams were tied, 14-14.

Kutztown returns to action Thursday night when it travels to Washington Adventist for a contest starting at 6 p.m. The Golden Bears will be seeking their first road victory of the 2010 season.
