Second half surge leads Kutztown past Chestnut Hill, 90-58

KUTZTOWN, PA (December 1, 2010)— The Kutztown University women's basketball team defeated Chestnut Hill, 90-58, Wednesday night at Keystone Arena in a non-conference game. Led by senior Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) who had 24 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists the Golden Bears won their fourth consecutive game. (BOXSCORE)

Following McQuade's brilliant all-around effort, she has 1,241 career points and 759 career rebounds.

Kutztown (4-1) is 3-0 all-time against Chestnut Hill. McQuade scored 10 of KU's first 14 points to get the team started. The Golden Bears held a solid lead but the Griffins battled back and with 14 seconds left in the first half, CHC's Kamia Smith landed a three pointer to cut KU's lead to 36-29 at the half.

After intermission, Kutztown erupted and scored the first 18 points giving KU a 54-29 advantage. Freshman Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) continued her instant scoring off the bench with 14 points. She was 5-for-9 shooting. Sisson looked like a natural, knocking down four 3-pointers. To establish a new career high scoring total for the second straight game. Sophomore Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) was also essential for Kutztown with 12 points.

Defensively, senior Kristen Murray (Harrisburg, PA/Trinity) snatched a career high 11 rebounds. During the first eight minutes of the second half when the Golden Bears established control for good they forced CHC to nine missed shots and three turnovers. KU's Brittany LeVan (Centre Hall, PA/Penns Valley) and Meredith Starr (Richmond, VA/Monacan) both had eight points. Starr was 2-for-3 from the three point distance.

Cecelia Herald led Chestnut Hill with 16 points. Latoya Laing had 13 and Smith finished with 11 but that wasn't enough to stop KU from controlling the second half.
Kutztown continues to mesh and all the pieces of the puzzle have seemed to come together. With its four game home stand completed, the Golden Bears will be tested on the road after playing in Keystone Arena since Nov. 20.

“We always start off great at home and it's so nice to play here,” McQuade said. “I think we will be fine on the road. Our coaches are doing a great job scouting the teams we are playing, so if we just keep using that information and staying prepared for everyone we face, we'll be ok. Although we lost a lot of girls last year, we've had a lot of girls step up like Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) and Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) so I think we're coming together.”

Preparation has been key for KU during its four-game winning streak, but the credit stretches to all the members of the team.

“Our biggest test will be how well we shoot on the road,” Kutztown head women's basketball coach Janet Malouff said. “We have enough good players and shooters, and if we come with the determination that we had in the first eight minutes of the second half tonight, we'll do fine Saturday. The starters are starting to step up and mesh together and we've had different kids step up on different nights. We have real good production from kids coming off the bench and the more depth we can get, the better it's going to be.”

The Golden Bears will make a quick trip to Philadelphia on Saturday Dec. 4 to take on the University of the Sciences for a 1 p.m. game.
