Fifth-ranked KU falls to top-ranked Shippensburg

KUTZTOWN, PA (November 9, 2010) – The Kutztown University field hockey team dropped an 8-1 decision against Shippensburg University in a non-conference match at Robb Field Tuesday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)

Despite the setback, Kutztown remains fifth in this week's Kookaburra/ National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFCHA) Division II top poll. This is the seventh consecutive week KU has been ranked in the top five. (COMPLETE RANKINGS)

Scoring for the Golden Bears was freshman Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades).  Koenig has continued to increase her role in the KU offense throughout the season and has amounted eight goals for the Golden Bears. In just her freshman season, Koenig continues to give head field hockey coach Betty Wesner reason to believe for bigger and better things down the road.

The Golden Bears (10-8 overall, 4-4) split their games last week as they fell to Bloomsburg on the road, and defeated Mercyhurst at University Field, 4-0.

On the offensive end, KU has been led by Abbey Sheeler (Fleetwood, PA/Brandywine Heights) and Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) who each have 10 goals this season. The duo of Sheeler and Gregory are just one of the contributors to Kutztown's seventh-ranked scoring offense in Division II (2.64). Another piece to KU's offensive puzzle has been Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) who has five goals and seven assists this season.

Top schools above Kutztown in this week's top poll are Shippensburg (first), University of Massachusetts Lowell (second), Bloomsburg (third), and East Stroudsburg (fourth).

Kutztown continues play on Saturday afternoon as it will host Mercy College at University Field beginning at 12:00 p.m.
