KU wrestling program earns 400th win with sweep at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 30, 2010) - The Kutztown University wrestling team had a dominating 3-0 effort at the Wilkes quads on Saturday afternoon to reach the 400 win milestone. (Complete Results)

After getting head coach Rob Fisher his 100th career dual win last weekend, the Golden Bears sweep landed the program at exactly 400 wins.

Fisher, now at 104 wins, along with current assistant coach Dan Hinkel (head coach from 1964-72, 89-96) account for over 50 percent of those wins with a combined 228.

"It is a very impressive milestone to reach," said Fisher. "It shows that our program is winning more than its losing and it is a credit to the great coaches and athletes that have been involved with this program."

The Golden Bears started the day off with a 45-0 shutout over Plymouth State, followed by a 35-16 win over Gettysburg. The No. 15 ranked Golden Bears rose to the occasion against Division III No. 16 rank Wilkes, taking them down by a score of 30-12.

Fisher's job has been easy lately with the way that the junior trio of Chris Sheetz, John Paukovits and Tim Darling have been wrestling.

Sheetz pinned all three of his opponents on Saturday, including two that did not make it out of the first period. In the 125 weight class, he has won by fall in each of his past five bouts and has a team high 10 pins on the season. Paukovits, at 141 pounds, finished off all of his matches before regulation ended, with two pin falls and one technical fall. His 17-1 tech fall against Wilkes gave KU the lead for good at 11-6.

"Chris and John are really wrestling great as of late," said Fisher. "Our whole team is looking good right now. We are using these meets as a dress rehersal leading up to the postseason."

Darling remained perfect on the season, winning by a major decision in the two matches that he wrestled. Since joining the team at the beginning of January, Darling has an 8-0 record with four major decisions.

Heavyweight Kevin Bolinsky, 157-pounder Derek Schmelyun and 149-pounder Brett Martinez each were undefeated on the day. Bolinsky was 2-0 with pins in each match, while Schmelyun was 3-0 with two tech falls.

Both of Martinez's wins came in thrilling fashion, with a 2-1 win against Femi Wheeler of Plymouth State and an 8-6 win over Wilkes' Robert Griffith.

David Zeek won by fall in 48 seconds against Plymouth State, while Alex Depew had a 15-0 tech fall against Gettysburg. Zac Kisslinger earned a 12-4 major decision at 165 pounds in the win over Gettsyburg.

With 13 wins, the Golden Bears will next look to surpass the school record for wins in a season The current record is15 by Al Zellner in the 1986-87 season and Fisher in 2001-02.

The Golden Bears will travel to Millersville on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match, followed by a home contests with Franklin & Marshall on Thursday and Mercyhurst on Friday.
