BLOOMSBURG, PA (January 30, 2010) - The Kutztown University women's basketball team dropped a 46-45 heartbreaker to Bloomsburg University on Saturday afternoon at Nelson Fieldhouse in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest. (BOXSCORE)
A layup by Dana Wieller with 1.4 seconds remaining, which gave the Huskies the winning margin and evened both teams records at 4-2 in the PSAC East. Kutztown fell to 13-6 overall and Bloomsburg improved to 11-7.
The Golden Bears had a balanced scoring attack throughout the game, but were never able to pull away from Bloomsburg.
Junior Melissa McQuade led KU with nine points and 12 rebounds. Senior Chauntelle Schroeder also brought down 12 boards to go along with her eight points.
KU was able to outrebound the Huskies by a 48-37 margin, but the Bloomsburg defense made scoring a challenge. The Golden Bears were held to 28.3 percent shooting from the floor and struggled at the free throw line (9-for-16).
The KU defense also had a stellar effort, holding the Huskies to 27.6 shooting from the floor and forcing 14 turnovers.
Rachel Wisemiller, Meredith Starr and Ashley Wood each netted seven points each for KU, while Vivian Melvin dished out a team high four assists and grabbed eight rebounds.
In the first half, Bloomsburg built an early 11-2 lead before KU stormed back to take a 23-21 advantage into the halftime intermission.
The Golden Bears will look to bounce back on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. with a PSAC East match against Cheyney at Keystone Arena.
