Golden Bears come up short against No. 2 Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. (January 23, 2010) - The No. 15 Kutztown University wrestling team dropped a 21-15 battle against No.2 Newberry College on Saturday morning at the Super Regional duals.

John Paukovits won his fifth straight match with a 3-2 thriller of Deral Brown at 141 pounds. Paukovits had a first period take down, while Brown had escapes in the first and second to send the match into third period deadlocked at two.

After choosing the down position, Paukovits managed to free himself and earn the winning margin with an escape.

Also continuing his success was sophomore Tim Darling at 184 pounds, improving his record as a Golden Bear to 5-0. Darling had a 9-2 decision over Bryant Brown, his smallest margin of victory at KU.

At 149 pounds, Brett Martinez pulled out a 7-5 win over Dale Debacco to pull the Golden Bears within two points at 8-6.

Ricardo Pena recorded a 5-0 shutout, while heavyweight Kevin Bolinsky finished off the match with a 5-1 decision.

Head coach Rob Fisher was pleased with his performance against the nation's second ranked team.

"We fought really hard today," said Fisher. "Although we didn't pull out the win, it was the best match I've seen our team play."

The Golden Bears will look to get Fisher his 100th career win against Belmont Abbey at 11 a.m., followed by a contest against Limestone to finish up the duals.
