KUTZTOWN, PA (December 9, 2009) – Senior guard Rachel Wisemiller (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) (Hazleton/Hazleton) scored 14 points to help the Kutztown University women's basketball team defeat Washington Adventist, 74-34, at Keystone Arena Tuesday night.
Wisemiller was one of three Golden Bears to reach double figures in scoring. Wisemiller made four 3-pointers as Kutztown (5-2 overall) finished a 3-1 home stand. For Wisemiller, it was the third straight game she has made at least three 3-pointers. Wisemiller also led the Golden Bears with eight rebounds and five assists.
Freshman guard Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick/Spring-Ford) established a career-high point total for the second consecutive game with 13 points and three steals. Junior forward Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) (Pittsburgh/Shaler) added 11 points for the Golden Bears, who finished with 24 assists on 29 baskets.
Junior guard Meredith Starr (Richmond, VA/Monacan) (Richmond, VA/Monacan) and senior guard Vivian Melvin (Chichester, PA/Chichester) (Chichester/Chichester) scored nine points each for Kutztown. Senior center Chauntelle Schroeder (Toronto, Ontario, CANADA/Mother Teresa) (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Mother Teresa) also grabbed eight rebounds.
McQuade scored the first six points of the game as Kutztown never trailed. The Golden Bears finished the first half by scoring the final 10 points to take a 39-18 lead into halftime. Overall for Kutztown, seven different players finished with four or more rebounds.
Washington Adventist, which was previously Columbia Union, fell to 0-8 overall. Erin Duffie led the Shock with 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
Kutztown returns to action on Tuesday December 22 when it travels to Syracuse (NY) to meet Le Moyne College in a 2 p.m. start. Washington Adventist will compete in the Indiana (Pa.) tournament beginning Saturday December 12.
