KUTZTOWN, PA (October 10, 2009) – In just 24 hours, the Kutztown women's volleyball team finished up its second doubleheader this weekend by defeating Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rival Slippery Rock, 3-1.
(BOXSCORE)
The Rock won the first game, 14-25, but KU came back to win the next three consecutively, with a result of 27-25, 25-23, and 25-23 to mark the win.
"This was a real big win for us," Coach John Gump said. "Especially because last night we were not able to finish with wins in four games against Indiana (PA). Today, we could finish in four."
Kutztown (9-9 overall, 2-7 PSAC) played hard offensively and defensively. The women tallied 53 kills, 167 attack attempts and 75 digs against The Rock.
After a shaky start in the first game, Kutztown pulled 30 attack attempts and 11 kills in the second game. Katie Miller (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) and Brianna Risch (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) (Coatesville/Coatesville) led game two with three kills each.
In game three, the Golden Bears gained 13 kills from 48 attack attempts. Cali Snell (York, PA/York Suburban) (York/York Suburban) and Lindsay Confer (Wingate, PA/Bald Eagle) (Wingate/Bald Eagle Area) each had five kills contributing to the 25-23 win.
The Golden Bears came up with 50 attack attempts and 17 kills in game four. Kelsey Nester (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) contributed 4 kills in seven attempts.
Setting up the attacks in the four games, Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) (Warminster/Saint Basil Academy) totaled 30 assists and Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) contributed 14.
Defensively, the Golden Bears protected their court with 75 digs. Jamie Celia (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) had 25 and teammate Wright contributed 17 digs.
"This was one of the best efforts our defense has shown this year," Gump said.
In just 24 hours, the Golden Bears played 16 games in four matches against PSAC schools. Yesterday, the Golden Bears faced California (PA) and Indiana (PA). Just one hour prior to the Slippery Rock match, the women played against Clarion.
"This weekend was a lot of work," said Gump. "But the women showed a lot of heart, especially in that last match."
The Golden Bears return to action next weekend, at home when they face Millersville on Oct. 16 and Shippensburg on Oct. 17.
