MANSFIELD, Pa. — The Kutztown University's women's basketball team dropped a 59-56 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest at Mansfield Wednesday.
Mallory Moore and Alicia Espigh scored 13 points each to lead the Mountaineers (6-16, 2-7 PSAC East).
Rachel Wisemiller (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) led all players with 18 points for KU (16-6, 6-3 PSAC East). Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) scored 11 points and had eight rebounds. Chauntelle Schroeder (Toronto, Ontario, CANADA/Mother Teresa) (jr. Toronto, Ontario/Mother Teresa Catholic) scored 10 points and grabbed 11 boards.
The Mountaineers used a 16-5 run to turned a one-point KU lead into a 10-point advantage, 47-37, with seven minutes to play.
KU trailed 54-46 with 3:44 left before mounting a comeback. McQuade hit a layup and Lara Dellegrotti (sr. Berwick/Berwick) converted a three-point play with 3:17 left to make it a three-point game.
Espigh's 3-pointer stretched Mansfield's lead to 57-51 with 2:09 left. Meredith Starr (Richmond, VA/Monacan) (so. Richmond, Va./Monacan) sank a layup and a three-point play by Schroeder with 1:14 remaining made it 57-56.
After the teams missed buckets on their ensuing possessions, MU's Courtney Brooks hit one free throw with 17 seconds left. KU committed a turnover on the inbounds pass and Brooks hit another free throw with one second left. Starr's desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer missed.
KU travels to Millersville on Saturday, with tipoff at 1 p.m.
